I'm the Man is a song by the American thrash metal band Anthrax . It was first published as the B-side of the early 1987 single "I Am the Law". In autumn 1987 the song was released again as an EP . It is considered the first song published to date that combined metal with rap .

useful information

The song is a collective composition of all band members. The band was inspired by the Beastie Boys for the piece, which was actually intended as fun . Originally it was only recorded for use as the B-side of the single "I Am the Law". It seemed too risky for the band to publish the piece on their own. The song was performed as a running gag during the 1987 tour for the recently released second album "Among the Living" , with singer Joey Belladonna playing the drums and the other band members performing the rap vocals. The band later interrupted the tour to re-record the song in two versions with the cast of Joey Belladonna (vocals), Dan Spitz ( guitar ), Scott Ian (guitar), Frank Bello ( bass ) and Charlie Benante ( drums ). Eddie Kramer acted as co-producer . In 1991, Anthrax recorded another version of the song. The song is part of the repertoire of the band's live performances.

Part of the song is a sample of the Metallica song Master of Puppets . It is typically instrumented for metal with drums, bass and guitar and contains a few scratches . The lyrics of the song are humorous and self-deprecating .

Publications

The first release as the B-side of the single "I Am the Law" took place in the spring of 1987. Later the decision was made to publish the song as the title track of an EP. On this EP the song was included in a "Censored Radio Version" (censored radio version), a "Def Uncensored Version" (uncensored version) and a live version. Complemented by a cover version of "Sabbath Bloody Sabbath" by the English band Black Sabbath and two other live recordings ("Caught in a Mosh" and "I Am the Law"), the EP was released in autumn 1987. On the cover of the album , the band members parody typical rapper- Poses in rapper outfits (jogging suits and trainers from Adidas as well as baseball caps and boonie hats ) in front of a wall sprayed with graffiti . The live recordings were made on July 11, 1987 during the "Among the Living" tour at the Arcadia Theater in Dallas , Texas .

The song is featured in various versions on numerous compilations , live albums and best-of releases by the band. In the film Yoga Hosers , Lily-Rose Depp , the daughter of Johnny Depp, sings a cover version of the song with Harley Quinn Smith.
