State of Euphoria is the fourth studio album by the American thrash metal band Anthrax . It was released on Island Records in the fall of 1988 and reached gold status in the US in 1989 for 500,000 units sold.

Emergence

According to Dan Spitz band members due to the unexpected success of goods Among the Living in a state of euphoria ( Engl. : State of Euphoria ), they earned an unexpectedly large amount of money and went on big festivals such as the Monsters of Rock on. This euphoric mood influenced the songwriting of the album, which is why Dan Spitz was rather critical of the album in 2006, which does not represent what the name Anthrax stands for. Expressed a similar Scott Ian , who saw the band under enormous time pressure to complete the album, because a Europe - tour with Iron Maiden was planned. The songwriting should have taken a few months longer because some of the songs sound unfinished. In addition, the overly long pieces contained a variety of guitar riffs that would have been enough for three or more songs.

The album was recorded at Quadradial Studios in Miami , Florida , and the mix at Electric Lady Studios in New York City . The record cover for State of Euphoria was drawn by illustrator Don Brautigam (front) and cartoonist Mort Drucker (back).

reception

Despite its even greater commercial success compared to Among the Living , the album received mixed reviews. Essi Berelian from the Rough Guide to Rock notes that the outstanding track Antisocial is a cover version, which underlines the immaturity of the album. Steve Huey from Allmusic calls the album unsatisfactory. There are strong moments, especially Be All, End All is one of the most melodic pieces of the band, and other pieces could also inspire. The bottom line is that half of the album is surprisingly colorless. Götz Kühnemund from Rock Hard, on the other hand, was enthusiastic about the album, it was harder and at the same time more melodic than its predecessor Among the Living . There are no bad songs on the album, it takes the band “further towards the top, that is: Metallica”.

Penicufesin EP

During the sessions of State of Euphoria , the band recorded various cover versions , which were released in August 1989 in Europe and Japan as EP Penikufesin .
