Emergence

Immediately after the previous album Volume 8: The Threat is Real was released , Ignition Records, Anthrax's record company at the time, had to file for bankruptcy. The band switched to Beyond Records, which also had to give up a short time later. It wasn't until the band were signed by Nuclear Blast in 2001 that Anthrax began work on a new album. At the same time, the band also changed management. In addition, the guitarist Rob Caggiano was accepted into the band.

The album was recorded in various studios in the New York City area in the fall of 2001. The album was produced by the band and the Scrap 60 producer team , including Rob Caggiano. The mix was done by Scrap 60 and Charlie Benante , while George Marino was responsible for the mastering . A total of three music videos were shot.

Originally the album was supposed to be called Superhero and then Taking the Music Back .

"Refuse to Be Denied" is about a New Yorker's reaction to the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001 . Ian stated in an interview that he "refuses to be deprived of his freedom and rights as an individual". Anthony Martini appears as a guest singer.

The lyrics of the first single "Safe Home" are from the guitarist Scott Ian . In an interview with the German magazine Metal Hammer , Ian stated that this was the first time he wrote positively about a relationship. In the music video for the song, actor Keanu Reeves and Canadian punk band Sum have 41 guest appearances.

“Nobody Knows Anything” is about the trouble the band had with their record labels over the years. At the same time, the current music business is being criticized, where, according to Ian, the majority of record companies are "run by uncreative business sharks who are only after the quick buck".

For the songs "Strap it On" and "Cadillac Rock Box" the former Pantera guitarist Dimebag Darrell contributed guitar solos. Darrell also gave the title to the latter song. Back then, Darrell owned a truck in which he installed a recording studio . He called the vehicle the Cadillac Rock Box . At the beginning of the song you can hear the message that Darrell Charlie Benante said on his answering machine .

On the second single "Taking the Music Back" Roger Daltrey , the singer of the British rock band The Who , appears as a guest. The music video for the song shows the band in a typical live situation. The single contains the cover versions “Exit” (originally by U2 ) and “Next to You” (originally by The Police ) as B-sides .

The limited edition of the album includes an acoustic version of "Safe Home" and a cover version of the song "We're a Happy Family" by the Ramones as a bonus .
