Frank Bello grew up as the eldest son of Charlie Benante's sister Rose and an Italian-American in Rockland County . He started playing guitar at the age of twelve . When he was fourteen, he moved to his uncle Charlie Benante and his mother in Bronx , New York City , to attend college . He also worked as a newspaper boy. Frank was an excellent student and played the trombone in the school band. In his spare time he jammed on guitar with his uncle Charlie Benante on drums, who was only one and a half years older. Both shared their admiration for the hard rock band Kiss . During one of these jam sessions, Benante criticized Bellos for playing the bass guitar on his electric guitar . Because of this, Bello switched from guitar to bass. His influencers included Steve Harris , Geddy Lee, and Geezer Butler .

In July 1981 Frank Bello became the guitar roadie of the newly founded Anthrax , in 1984 he replaced bassist Dan Lilker , who had to leave the band due to drug problems. After an argument with Charlie Benante, he left Anthrax in January 2004 and became the bassist in the rock band Helmet (band) , which had just re-formed. He worked on the still open recordings for the album Size Matters and played on the subsequent tour . In 2005, Anthrax re-formed itself in the classic line-up from 1984 with the participation of Bello.

Bello plays a bass made by Fender . The Frank Bello Bass was released in 2005 as part of the company's Artist Series . In 2007 the Frank Bello Jazz Bass followed under the Squier brand . According to Bellos, the reason for this was that he wanted to offer an inexpensive and user-friendly bass with good quality for beginners.

Frank Bello had a younger brother named Anthony, who was murdered on March 25, 1996 in the Bronx, New York . The background to the crime was not clarified. In memory of his dead brother, Frank Bello wears a tattoo of his face on his right upper arm with the words In Memory of Anthony underneath. At the end of the Anthrax album Volume 8: The Threat Is Real , which was released in 1998, there is a hidden song he composed with the title Pieces , in which Frank Bello mentally processes the murder of his brother. It is a slow ballad with acoustic guitars.

Other Projects

In 1996, Bello was heard with Scott Ian on the sampler Spacewalk - A Salute to Ace Frehley . In 2001, Bello played with other Anthrax members on the soundtrack of the John Carpenter film Ghosts of Mars . In 2005, he took Paul Di'Anno , Alex Skolnick , Chris Traynor (ex-Helmet) and John Tempesta the piece Wrathchild for Iron Maiden -Tribute sampler Numbers from the Beast on. He has also made guest appearances in films and television series such as A Terribly Nice Family and Law & Order . In 2014 Bello will release an album called Booze & Cigarettes with Dave Ellefson and drummer Jeff Friedl (The Beta Machine) . The project is called Altitudes & Attitude . An EP of the same name was released on January 14th.
