Baseball cap
A baseball cap (short cap or cap , colloquially Cappy , as a pseudo- Anglicism baseball cap , also baseball cap , in Austrian colloquially also Kappel or Kapperl , Swiss German also Dächappe ) is a variant of the peaked cap with a slightly larger sun visor, which was originally mainly worn by young people in the United States has been. The baseball cap allegedly became popular because on April 24, 1849 the players of the New York Yankees baseball club at a game in New Jersey wore stiff caps instead of the straw hats customary at the time , which were called "hemispherical hats" and initially had no umbrella.
The way of wearing the umbrella to the back also comes from baseball itself, where some positions wear a protective mask in front of the face that is not compatible with the umbrella in front.
Nowadays, all defense players, referees and coaches usually wear baseball caps during the game, whereas the players on the attacking team wear protective helmets, which, however, are also equipped with an umbrella.
In Germany, the baseball cap first became popular among young people in the 1970s. From the beginning of the 1980s, initially based on American street gangs, the fashion of wearing hats with the peak backwards emerged. Various youth scenes then took on this appearance. Studies by the Ig Nobel Prize winner John Trinkaus showed in the mid-1990s that between 10 percent and 40 percent of the students observed wore their baseball caps upside down.

In the mid-1990s, the very inexpensive baseball cap based on the American model made its way into uniform fashion in German-speaking countries. In addition to the beret, it has superseded the previously preferred mountain or work hat and other traditional headgear in many authorities, state and civil organizations and associations .
