biography

Dan Lilker started his musical career in 1981. Together with Scott Ian he founded the band Anthrax; soon after, Charlie Benante (drums), Dan Spitz (guitarist) and Neil Turbin (singer) joined them. In the beginning Lilker still played guitar, but he soon began to switch to bass. The band received a recording contract with the American music label Megaforce Records , which finally released the Anthrax debut album Fistful of Metal in 1984 .

After drug escapades, Lilker had to leave the band in 1984 and founded the thrash metal band Nuclear Assault together with the also former anthrax musician John Connelly . At Nuclear Assault, Lilker was able to implement his preference for extreme music. After a year, however, Nuclear Assault was put on hold for the time being, as Lilker and his old anthrax colleague Scott Ian founded the hardcore / crossover band Stormtroopers of Death (SOD). In addition to Lilker and Ian, the band also consisted of anthrax drummer Charlie Benante and singer Billy Milano . After the recording of the debut album called Speak English or Die , which has sold over 1,000,000 copies to date, the band, which began as a fun project, was disbanded for the time being, and Lilker returned to Nuclear Assault.

With Nuclear Assault, Lilker has now released the first album by the band Game Over , followed by three more albums, before Lilker left the band in 1991 due to the lack of success. Now Lilker could concentrate on the grindcore band Brutal Truth, which he founded in 1990 as a side project. After the release of two albums on the British music label Earache Records , the band was put on hold for the time being until a new label was found in 1997 with Relapse Records . After the release of the album Sounds of the Animal Kingdom , work with Brutal Truth was discontinued and only resumed in 2006. In 2002, Lilker returned to Nuclear Assault.

In the meantime Lilker was still active in numerous other bands such as the German Holy Moses , the grindcore band around Relapse Records founder Exit 13 , the bands Heart Attak, White Heat, Hemlock and Redrum.

Dan Lilker currently plays in Brutal Truth, Nuclear Assault, in the black metal bands Crucifist and Overlord Exterminator, in the project Ravenous (with Abscess and Necrophagia members), Venomous Concept (with members of Napalm Death and Brutal Truth) and In 2009 he wrote his audio biography "Perpetual Conversion: 30 Years & Counting in the Life of Metal Veteran Dan Lilker" with the resurrected band SOD, with Dave Hofer. The book will be published in the summer via Paper + Plastick Records.
