Sounds of the Animal Kingdom is the third and last studio album by the grindcore band Brutal Truth before they split up in 1999.

History of origin

The EP Kill Trend Suicide was followed by the first full album for Brutal Truth's new record company Relapse Records . The band worked again with producer Billy Anderson and recorded the album in June 1997 at Baby Monster Studios in New York City . The cover shows a man in a suit with his mouth wide open while screaming. The right half of the body is that of a gorilla . The photo montage was based on an idea by singer Richard Hoak and was created by Eric Horst.

After the album, the band first broke up. The compilation Goodbye Cruel World (1998) followed as a farewell work .

Bill Yurkiewicz (co-label founder of Relapse Records and singer with Exit-13 ) is involved as a guest singer on the song Postulate . The beginning of Blue World was recorded in Jon Smith's Smoke, Grind and Sleep studio. The song Prey is followed by a 20-minute loop .

Music style and lyrics

Richard Hoak was heavily influenced by Desmond Morris ' book The Naked Monkey on this album . The lyrics are socially critical and mostly deal with the negative side of humanity: drugs ( Jemenez Cricket ), greed ( fisting ) and war ( Die Laughing , Foolish Bastard ). A number of songs deal with the subject of adapting to existing, faulty social norms and portray them as negative ( Pork Farm , Dementia , Soft Mind , Average People , Machine Parts ). Mike DaRonco from Allmusic describes the lyrics as a "gloomy but realistic prospect of the end of the world"

Musically, they were inspired by producer Billy Anderson, who gave the band great freedom in the musical implementation and, in contrast to Colin Richardson (with whom the band worked on Need to Control ), reduced the production to the bare minimum. He also introduced the band members to experimental stoner , doom and sludge bands such as Sleep , Eyehategod , Neurosis and Buzzov • en . The music oscillates between Grindcore and Death Metal , but with influences from the aforementioned bands. The songs are pervaded by tempo changes, in addition to blast beats , more doomy passages come into their own. Slow, calm, sometimes jazzy passages like " Jemenez Cricket or the initially calming Blue World [meet] blatant grind songs like Pork Farm and Foolish Bastard ". Musically Dan Lilker described her style at the time as "the peak of her abilities"

Republication

Relapse Records released the album on CD together with the EP Kill Trend Suicide in 2006 and had it remastered by Scott Hull ( Agoraphobic Nosebleed / Pig Destroyer ) . In addition, liner notes were written by Albert Mudrian ( Choosing Death: The Unbelievable Story of Death Metal & Grindcore ) and the two band members Kevin Sharp and Dan Lilker. Compared to the first release, the songs 4:20 and Unbaptized are missing , Prey was placed at the end of the album. A video for Dead Smart by director Gouhei Sunano has been attached.
