Billy Anderson

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Billy Anderson is an American record producer , sound engineer, and musician . Anderson became known in the 1990s as a sound engineer and producer for metal , grunge , alternative and hardcore punk . He has since worked with a variety of different bands such as EyeHateGod , Mr. Bungle , Neurosis , Sick of It All , Fantômas and Sleep as a producer and has acted as a guest musician with bands such as The Melvins , Agalloch and Orange Goblin . He is also a member of the bands Blessing the Hogs , The Men of Porn , Solodolor and Good God .

Early holdings

At the beginning of the 1990s, Anderson acted as a sound engineer for Californian punk bands . With the albums To a Frown by Buzzov • en for Roadrunner Records and Sleep's Holy Mountain by Sleep for Earache Records , 1993 saw the first production activities in the spectrum of Doom Metal . In the same year Anderson acted as a sound engineer and co-producer of the The Melvins album Houdini for Atlantic Records , for which he also recorded various bass tracks. In the following years he worked for both indie and major labels . For the Warner Music Group and its subcontractors, he produced the sick-of-it-all album Scratch the Surface in 1994 and the Mr. Bungle album Disco Volante in 1995 . He worked for Roadrunner Records in 1994 as a sound engineer on the Buzzov • en album Sore and as a producer for Relapse Records in 1996 on the Neurosis album Through Silver In Blood and on the Brutal Truth album Kill Trend Suicide and for Century Media on the EyeHateGod album Dopesick .

Working method

Anderson prefers direct recordings. He deliberately refrains from using headphones and digital recordings and only digitizes the analogue recorded soundtracks after the recording in order to process and mix the recordings with professional equipment. In his opinion, the dominant use of technical equipment would lose the feeling in the pieces.

"For me, mood and energy are far more important than that every tone is flawless and isolated."

- Billy Anderson

He preferably creates reverb effects of the drums by re-recording a recording of the desired drum track played through a PA system in the recording room. The desired distortion is varied by adjusting the distance between the loudspeaker boxes and the microphone . Anderson used the method, described as particularly organic, for the neurosis albums Enemy of the Sun and Through Silver in Blood , for the self-titled debut of the band Fantômas and Surrounded by Thieves by High on Fire .

As an important basic idea of the collaboration, Anderson describes the idea of seeing oneself as part of the respective band. Another relevant factor in his way of working is the constant attempt to show the musicians the expected game.

“I'm not going to explain to anyone what to play unless I can at least sit down to try it myself. I've seen sound engineers and producers trying to explain to someone how to play, even though they couldn't even begin to hope they could do it themselves. That seems pretty hypocritical to me. I can't play everything but at least I try to clarify the idea ... "
