Acid King is a stoner doom band from San Francisco . It was founded in 1993 by Lori S. (singer and guitarist), Joey Osbourne (drummer) and Peter Lucas (bassist). Since then the band has recorded four studio albums and three EPs (with a changing line-up on bass) .

history

The name of the band is derived from the book Say You Love Satan by David St. Clair . Its protagonist Ricky Kasso, who committed a satanic murder in Northport, New York in 1984, is nicknamed The Acid King . According to Lori S. the name of the band was already fixed before she formed a band with Peter Lucas and a few months later with Joey Osbourne. Acid King first played a few concerts with bands like The Melvins , The Obsessed and Hawkwind before releasing their first EP in 1994. With a changing line-up on bass, two more EPs and three albums were recorded by 2006. After a nine-year break, the band released their fourth studio album, Middle of Nowhere, Center of Everywhere , in spring 2015 .

The band Acid King is mentioned in two books published in 2003, one in The Encyclopedia of Heavy Metal and the other in the book A to Z of Doom, Gothic & Stoner Metal . In the documentary Such Hawks Such Hounds - Scenes from the American Hardrock Underground , completed in 2009, she is one of the bands portrayed.

style

The group's music is assigned to the Stoner Doom . Influenced by traditional Doom Metal and Psychedelic Rock , Acid King's music is characterized by slow, deeply played and heavily distorted guitar riffs , which are accompanied by the singer's distinctive, “hypnotic” voice.

In an interview with The Obelisk, Lori S. calls the album Middle of Nowhere, Center of Everywhere “more grown-up” than the earlier releases. However, she also pointed out that Acid King hardly changed and more nuances of the sound were varied. She draws parallels to other popular groups, whose style has changed only slightly over the decades. Lori S. calls the album, in comparison to the earlier Acid King releases, a more atmospheric album that is less concerned with heaviness and volume.
