The Mystick Krewe of Clearlight is an American southern rock band made up of various members of the New Orleans sludge scene . The band was originally founded under the name Clearlight, but changed its name to differentiate itself from the French progressive rock band of the same name.

history

The Mystick Krewe of Clearlight was formed in 1996 as a result of a few improvisational blues-rock jam sessions . The band members were mainly known from joint sludge projects and the NOLA scene and often rehearsed together. According to Garry Sharpe-Young , the band's formation was a direct development from the early inaugural jam sessions of the bands EyeHateGod , Crowbar , Down and Corrosion of Conformity .

The project became a full-fledged band through the efforts of LaCaze and Bower to give members the opportunity to produce music beyond their usual sludge style.

After a few years, which the band had with jam sessions and live performances in the New Orleans area, the self-titled and by Dave Fortmann produced debut of the band The Mystick Krewe of Clearlight on the New York Crust -, Psychedelic - and Doom was in September 2000 -Metal label Tee Pee Records released. Although the band acted on earlier demo recordings with vocals, including by Pepper Keenan , the debut album remained purely instrumental.

The end of 2000 following split - EP Free… / The Father, the Son and the Holy Smoke , with the sludge band Acid King , appeared with the participation of the popular Doom metal singer Scott Weinrich ( Saint Vitus , The Obsessed ). Weinrich sang both of the band's songs and also played an electric guitar alienated with e-bow effects on both pieces . This EP was also produced by Dave Fortmann. Together with Weinrich's band The Obsessed, The Mystick Krewe of Clearlight released a limited split vinyl single with cover songs by the southern rock band Lynyrd Skynyrd the following year . The Mystick Krewe of Clearlight contributed the song Cheatin 'Woman, recorded in 1999 . This time the recording was supported by Pepper Keenan as a singer.

In the spring of 2001 The Mystick Krewe of Clearlight wanted to present themselves to the general public on a joint North Carolina tour with Corrosion of Conformity and Clutch . However, the band's entire musical equipment was stolen from the band trailer in Dallas , whereupon The Mystick Krewe of Clearlight disbanded for the time being.

It was not until 2012 that the band played again a few concerts in the New Orleans area. After a European tour with EyeHateGod, 42-year-old Joey LaCaze died of respiratory failure in his home on August 23, 2013. The band's continued existence has been uncertain since then.

style

The band is mainly attributed to Southern Rock or Hard Rock. Doomy riffs, sprawling guitar solos , a groovy rhythm and the use of the Hammond organ are named as special characteristics . Rick Kutner sees influences from blues-rock, soul , funk and hard rock for all music .

Christian Maiwald describes the band's style for the Ox fanzine as “riff-heavy Seventies rock, with Hammond organs” Ned Raggett draws comparisons to Deep Purple because of the Hammond organ, just like Rick Kutner because of the guitars . Andreas Kohl compares the band for Visions with Grand Funk Railroad , Led Zeppelin , Mountain and Thin Lizzy .
