Scott Weinrich
Robert Scott "Wino" Weinrich (born September 28, 1961 in Maryland , USA ) is an American doom metal musician who became known with bands such as The Obsessed , Saint Vitus , Spirit Caravan , Place of Skulls and The Hidden Hand .
Life
Scott "Wino" Weinrich learned to play the guitar in high school . In 1977 he founded The Obsessed , where he not only took on the position of guitarist, but also that of singer and songwriter. The band released two demos and was on the compilation Metal Massacre VI of Metal Blade Records with the song Concrete Cancer represented.
When Saint Vitus had to replace their singer Scott Reagers in 1986, Weinrich took his place. With them he recorded Born Too Late in 1986 . But already in 1990, after the albums Mournful Cries (1988) and V (1989), Wino left the band due to an argument with band leader Dave Chandler.
Wino then reformed The Obsessed and initially released the LP The Obsessed with them , a compilation of old material from the early eighties. Two more albums, two singles and a documentary video followed, until The Obsessed finally broke up in 1995 due to a lack of media presence and the associated poor sales. The band reformed in 2012 and released the album 'Sacred' via Relapse Records in 2017. Since Weinrich repeatedly had drug problems, a 2014 tour with his band at the time 'St. Vitus' arrested in Norway and expelled accordingly to the USA, which gave him a 5-year entry ban to Europe. He also failed to apply for a new entry permit. For this reason, 'The Obsessed' had to cancel their planned performances in 2019.
After that, Wino fell into severe depression and lived on the streets. He finally returned to Maryland in 1996 (he had left his homeland for California in 1980 ) and was persuaded to do a jam session by old companions Gary Isom ( drums ) and Dave Sherman ( electric bass ) . A short time later, the trio formed the band Shine, which renamed itself Spirit Caravan (based on a song by The Obsessed) during the recording of their first album .
The band released two albums and various contributions to samplers and compilations . Spirit Caravan split in 2002 because of the band members' financial situation. After a brief stint at Place of Skulls, Wino founded his new band The Hidden Hand . But this band only lasted until 2007, as Wino saw no more prospects for the band due to unfair business conduct of his partners, although in five years three successful albums were released and several tours were completed, the last and longest of them in spring 2007 through Europe.
Wino also worked on Dave Grohl's project Probot in 2004 , in which he sings a song and plays guitar and also uses the guitar in the video Shake Your Blood .
At the beginning of 2009 his first solo album Punctuated Equilibrium was released , which, like his other LPs, has been released by Southern Lord since 1999 . The band, simply called "Wino", completed a tour of Europe in spring 2009. However, the group has been on hold since the death of bassist Jon Blank , who died of a drug overdose. In 2010, however, his acoustic album Adrift followed , also under the name Wino, on Exile on Mainstream Records .
Also in 2009, Wino joined the band Shrinebuilder , an all-star project from the Doom Metal / Stoner Rock scene. The band released their first album in 2009.
In February 2010, Wino went on a European tour with his old Saint Vitus colleagues. In the same year the music project Premonition was born. In summer 2011, the album '13' was released under the band name Premonition 13.
In his long musical career, Wino has worked with musicians such as Lemmy Kilmister , Bill Ward & Geezer Butler (from Black Sabbath ) and Dave Grohl ( Nirvana , Foo Fighters , Probot and many more).
style
Wino regularly tunes his guitar 2 - 5 semitones lower. He almost exclusively plays Gibson Les Pauls and 1960s Marshall Stacks or the Sunn Model T. This creates a very warm, wobbly but also muddy guitar sound. Wino only plays pure Doom Metal with Saint Vitus . In his other bands you hear more stoner metal , a mixture of hard rock , doom metal and stoner rock .
