history

Albert Mudrian, editor at Red Flag Media, Philadelphia , wrote with the book Choosing Death: The Incredible History of Death Metal & Grindcore a widely acclaimed historical outline of the music genres Death Metal and Grindcore . The commercial success of the book led Alex Mulcahy, owner of Red Flag Media, to found the first nationwide magazine for extreme metal in the USA; Decibel was first published in October 2004. Mudrian has been the magazine's editor-in-chief ever since.

Since the first issue, the magazine has had a Hall of Fame section , which presents background reports on music albums which, in the opinion of the editors, are among the milestones of extreme metal. The book Precious Metal: Decibel Presents the Stories Behind 25 Extreme Metal Masterpieces , which was published by Da Capo Press in 2009, was compiled from this category . Since January 2011, the magazine has included a Flexidisc in the subscription issue , which contains exclusive material such as cover versions , demo recordings and previously unpublished songs by artists and groups on which Decibel had previously reported. These singles are also available at selected record stores and in the magazine's online shop. So far, publications by Enslaved , Napalm Death , The Black Dahlia Murder have appeared in this series . and Kreator .
