The Black Dahlia Murder is a Melodic Death Metal - band from Detroit , Michigan , which at Metal Blade Records under contract. Their music shows clear influences from the areas of death and metal core . The band is named after the murder of Elizabeth Short , a crime that happened in Los Angeles in 1947 and remained a topic of conversation there for decades.

In 2002 they released their first EP on Lovelost Records , called A Cold-Blooded Epitaph . They then went on tour with Hate Eternal , Evergrey and Arch Enemy .

After the release of her EP, the record company Metal Blade Records became aware of her and immediately signed her. They recorded their debut album "Unhallowed" shortly thereafter and then went on tour with The Red Chord , Entombed , Napalm Death and Terror.

Bassist Bart Williams left his original band Detroit's Today I Wait to tour with The Black Dahlia Murder. After the tour with Throwdown , he joined the band entirely. Bart Williams was also involved in the production of the debut album Unhallowed .

Before they recorded the next album, their drummer Cory left the band because he could not stand the rigors of the ongoing tours. He was replaced by Zach Gibson, who also played Miasma . The second studio album Miasma reached number 118 on the Billboard Top 200 Charts . After the tour that followed, drummer Zach Gibson left the band, his successor for the upcoming Japan tour was Tony Laureano (he also played with Nile , Dimmu Borgir and Angel Corpse ). On the tour, Bart Williams also played for the Murder and then became a permanent member of the band. Tony left the band after the tour, however, and Pierre Langlois was brought into the band as the new drummer. He played on the Sounds Of The Underground tour and then left the band. His successor was found in the ex- All That Remains drummer Shannon Lucas.

The third studio album, Nocturnal , was released on September 18, 2007 and reached number 72 on the Billboard Top 200 charts.

In 2007, The Black Dahlia Murder toured the US with Cannibal Corpse to promote their album Nocturnal .

The band also played at Ozzfest 2005 and took part on the Sounds of the Underground Tour in 2006 in the US and Canada. They also played at the Wacken Open Air 2007.

In January and February 2008 the band toured the US with 3 Inches of Blood , Hate Eternal , Decrepit Birth , Brain Drill and Animosity . They also played on the Summer Slaughter Tour with Kataklysm , Cryptopsy , Vader , Whitechapel and Despised Icon .

In May 2009, The Black Dahlia Murder released their first DVD entitled Majesty . The DVD includes a documentary about the band, live footage of the Summer Slaughter tour and the tour with Children of Bodom . The DVD also includes all of the music videos and behind-the-scenes footage.

The fourth studio album Deflorate was released on September 15, 2009 via Metal Blade Records.

On June 17, 2011, the fifth studio album Ritual was released , again on Metal Blade Records. According to Blabbermouth.net , the group sold 13,000 copies of their album in the first week after its release, which meant that Ritual debuted at number 31 on the official US charts. The previous album Deflorate , however, sold 12,000 times in the States, which was enough for a jump to 43rd place in the charts.

In April 2012, bassist Ryan Williams left the band after six years and was then replaced by former Despised Icon bassist Max Lavelle. Seven months later, in November 2012, Shannon Lucas left the band to pursue other interests. As a replacement for the current tour, Alan Cassidy stepped in as a drummer.

In the spring of 2013, despite the departure of two band members (drummer Shannon Lucas and bassist Bart Williams) the planned release of an album with the title Everblack was announced. On April 10, 2013 the album was presented in the iTunes Store with cover, tracklist and US release date on June 11, 2013. On the same day the single "Into The Everblack" was offered for purchase and download.

The Black Dahlia Murder play Death Metal influenced by In Flames , At the Gates , Morbid Angel , Dissection and Carcass with melodic inserts. Singer Trevor Strnad alternates between deep, typical Death Metal growls and higher screams. Trevor Strnad once said when asked about the band's musical style: "I always said that we play Melodic Death Metal. We are most influenced by Swedish bands and Carcass [...] Our style of music was more often based on our looks as named after our music. Our first EP is actually hellish hardcore , which is actually stupid. "
