Nile ( English for, Nile ') is a technical death metal - band from Greenville , South Carolina in the United States , whose music by Egyptian distinguished influences.

history

The band was formed in 1993 by guitarist and singer Karl Sanders , bassist and singer Chief Spiers and drummer Pete Hammoura. In 1995, Festivals of Atonement followed, with their first EP on their own label Anubis Records . Tours with Obituary and Deicide followed. Visceral Productions released the next EP Ramses Bringer of War in 1997 . However, the label went bankrupt before the band could release an album on it.

A short time later, guitarist Dallas Toler-Wade joined the cast for live support. In 1999 Relapse Records released the debut album Amongst the Catacombs of Nephren-Ka, which was still recorded as a trio . In order to promote the album, a US tour and a global tour with Morbid Angel followed. On the next album Black Seeds of Vengeance Derek Roddy could be heard as the new drummer because Pete Hammoura broke his arm shortly before the recording session. Due to personal differences, drummer Hammoura and bassist Spiers left the line-up. On the following tour together with Incantation and Impaled Tony Laureano was represented as drummer and Jon Vesano as bassist. With this line-up, the album In Their Darkened Shrines was recorded and a tour with Hate Eternal , Origin and Arch Enemy came about. In 2003 the band also toured North America with Kreator , Amon Amarth and Vader , followed by concerts with Misery Index and Dew-Scented in Europe .

In the meantime, the members concentrated on other projects: Laureano joined Dimmu Borgir , while Toler-Wade started a side project. Sanders also released a solo album with Saurian Meditation . In 2004, George Kollias joined the band as the new drummer. This released the EP Lashed to the Slave Stick and the album Annihilation of the Wicked in 2005 . This was followed by a tour with King Diamond and another world tour, on which Joe Payne was represented as the new bassist. After a few line-up changes, Toler-Wade took over the vocals in addition to Sanders, while the bass was taken over by session musicians. Another tour followed with Six Feet Under , disbelief , Dying Fetus and Cataract and a Japan tour with The Haunted and Exodus . The band also played in Germany with Unleashed , Pungent Stench , Behemoth and Incantation. In 2006 the band performed in Germany with Psycroptic , Yyrkoon and Devastator, among others . In addition, the band had signed a contract with Nuclear Blast , which was followed in 2007 by the single Papyrus Containing the Spell to Preserve Its Possessor Against Attacks from He Who Is in the Water and the album Ithyphallic . Shortly after the album was released, the band went on a tour of Australia with Decapitated . The band was also part of the Ozzfest tour and gave some appearances with Chthonic .

In December 2007 the band played together with Six Feet Under, Finntroll and Belphegor . During a few other tours, Sanders wrote new material and released the solo album Saurian Exorcism in April 2009 . At the end of 2009 she joined the next album Those Whom the Gods Detest . The group then went on a European tour with Grave and Krisiun , before performing in the US with Immolation in the spring of 2010 . In 2012 the band went on another world tour and also played with DRI and Suffocation in Jakarta , Indonesia . In the same year a new album was released with At the Gate of Sethu . In addition, Todd Ellis had come to the band as the new bassist, because the contact with bassist Chris Lollis had broken off while working on the new album. Like its predecessor, the album was produced by Neil Kernon .

Among the various concerts that followed, some were in Germany towards the end of 2012 together with Morbid Angel, Kreator and Fueled by Fire . In 2013, participation in the 70,000 Tons of Metal 2013 was the high point of the year so far.

style

Outstanding features of the band are, among other things, the very precisely worked out texts, which depict ancient Egyptian documents (such as the Egyptian Book of the Dead or the Book of Apophis ), deities and legends and also completely retell them. Sanders gets his information from literature, television and university websites. For Toler-Wade, the “brutal aggression” of the era fits perfectly with Death Metal. On the debut Amongst the Catacombs of Nephren-Ka , the band played aggressive Death Metal, which lyrically was heavily inspired by the works of HP Lovecraft . On the album Black Seeds of Vengeance , the band was varied in terms of text and speed, with the use of Egyptian-sounding music being characteristic. In Their Darkened Shrines was, as usual, influenced by Egyptian mythology and the works of HP Lovecraft. Guitar riffs like in the song Unas Slayer of the Gods are reminiscent of the doom metal band Candlemass . According to Sanders, Annihilation of the Wicked was more spontaneous than its predecessor, with the text being used again in Egyptian writings and the works of Lovecraft. On the album Ithyphallic , the band played technically demanding, fast death metal. On the album, the band was lyrically influenced less by Egyptian history and more by Lovecraft's work Necronomicon . Those Whom the Gods Detest was characterized above all by the fast play of the drums and the technically demanding playing of the instruments. In addition, influences from Doom Metal can also be heard here from time to time. Compared to its predecessor Karl Sanders, the album again has more vocal parts, but Toler-Wade still took over the majority. On the album At the Gate of Sethu progressive traits were first recognizable.
