At the Gate of Sethu is the seventh album by the technical death metal band Nile ; it was released on June 29, 2012 on Nuclear Blast .

Emergence

The album is the successor to their record Those Whom the Gods Detest from 2009. The band wrote from May 2011 to March 2012 on the works on the album. Sanders explained the album title as follows: “The gate of Sethu is one of many gates through which the sun god Ra has to pass on his journey through the darkness and the hours of the night, in order to finally be reborn in the morning sun, in the sign of triumph and fame ”. The drums were recorded at Soundlab Studios in Columbia , South Carolina , while the rest of the recording took place at the Serpent Headed Studio . The album was mixed in the Narcotic Wasteland Studio by Neil Kernon , who also worked as a producer again. Jason Hagan, Jon Vesano and Mike Breazeale were guest singers on the recordings.

Music style and lyrics

As with the previous albums, At the Gate of Sethu dealt with Egyptian mythology . According to Laut.de's Michael Edele , Nile has hardly changed in the course of her career and wrote that the band was as resistant to evolution as a crocodile, so that it was almost unjust to accuse a band like Cannibal Corpse of releasing the same album over and over again . The songs are usually played quickly, with the occasional sluggish song like When My Wrath Is Done . Compared to its predecessor, the atmospheric and seemingly oriental sounds have increased again. The singing was varied. Above all, the drums are usually played extremely quickly, which stormbringer.at describes as "almost inhuman". Songs like The Chaining Of The Iniquitous also show influences from Doom Metal . The song Tribunal of the Dead is referred to as a cross between Morbid Angel and Deicide . Robert Müller from Metal Hammer recognized progressive traits in the album for the first time , so that, in combination with the production, he felt reminded of the late Deaths .

Michael Edele from Laut.de found the “Neil Kernon sound took some getting used to because he apparently forgot the bass, which makes things seem a little thin on the surface”. The songs are only occasionally catchy, but "if you want catchy, easy-to-consume music, you don’t reach for Nile". Edele awarded four out of five possible points. The album achieved three points in the readers' rating. Robert Fröwein from stormbringer.at wrote that the album is on the same level as Those Whom the Gods Detest , but it does not come to the classics like In Their Darkened Shrines and Annihilation of the Wicked . Fröwein awarded four out of five points. Florian Hefft from metal.de wrote that Nile was still herself, but the album didn't come close to albums like Annihilation of the Wicked or Ithyphallic . At the Gate of Sethu is a little undercooked and sometimes even unimportant. This becomes especially clear with the song The Fiends Who Come to Steal the Magick of the Deceased , which seems like an arbitrary cut from different parts. Hefft awarded six out of ten points. According to Robert Müller from Metal Hammer , the band has developed a bit. However, the album does not come close to Those Whom the Gods Detest or In Their Darkened Shrines and awarded five out of seven points.
