Music style and lyrics

Compared to its predecessor In Their Darkened Shrines , the band used much less Egyptian sounding samples on Annihilation of the Wicked . The songs are described as catchier than the previous ones, although borrowings from other genres, such as the use of a black metal riff in Lashed to the Slave Stick , are also characteristic. The songs mostly have a progressive character. The game speed is often very fast, as in Cast Down the Heretic , but is also sometimes reduced, so that songs like Von Unspeakable Cults and User-Maat-Re have a Doom Metal character. The band is less technical than on its predecessor, whereas the songs are more brutal. Another characteristic feature is the use of instruments, some of which are not genre, such as the use of a bouzouki (other sources also speak of a baglamas ). As usual, the songs were inspired by Egyptian mythology and the works of HP Lovecraft . The song Of Ineffable Cults was named after Lovecraft 's work of the same name .

Reviews

Greg Prato from Allmusic praised Karl Sanders' guitar playing and described him as one of the best guitarists in the extreme metal genre. Thomas Weeber from metal.de also praised the album and particularly emphasized the versatility of the album and the technically demanding level of play. The band had created a similarly good album as In Their Darkened Shrines , avoiding "In Their Darkened Shrines - Part 2". He gave it nine out of ten points and advised a blind buy, as you couldn't go wrong with this album. In issue 207 of the rock-hard magazine, author Volkmar Weber described songs such as Cast Down the Heretic and Sacrifice Unto Sebek as "some of the most brutal and technically demanding things the death lead market has ever had to offer". Drummer George Kollias had to hide from Tony Laureano, who was also not untalented; but this “should sink into the ground with shame”. Weber particularly emphasized the fast double bass game and the high level of playing precision, which he described as "frightening". Weber also described playing the guitar as precise and compared it to a Swiss clockwork.
