Ithyphallic is the fifth studio album by the US death metal band Nile . It was recorded from February to April 2007 and released on July 17 of the same year. The cover shows a statue of the Egyptian god Min , which is erected by slaves. The title refers to the Egyptian god Bes , who is usually represented with a phallus .
Emergence
The album was recorded at Sound Lab Studios in South Carolina .
Style and content
The album is the first since the band's debut album, Amongst the Catacombs of Nephren-Ka , which does not contain any notes on the lyrics (English " liner notes ").
It contains a lot of tempo changes and, as is typical for the band, sounds " Egyptian ". The drums are very fast and, according to Blabbermouth, played with "inhuman dexterity". The vocals are guttural , as usual in Death Metal , but still “more understandable than that of many other bands”.
reception
According to Chad Bowar of the website about.com , the album follows the previous albums with its "great musicians and good songs". Scott Alisoglu thinks Nile "doesn't know how to make a bad album and Ithyphallic is another example of that". Jackie Smit, who awards 8.5 out of 10 points for the album, sees nothing new in the album, but considers Ithyphallic to be a “solid piece of work”.
On the other hand, Tyler Munro gave the album the rating "poor". He thinks that "not even a bunch of bad penis jokes" make Ithyphallic interesting, alluding to the title of the album.
Historical and fictional references
As He Creates So He Destroys , Eat of the Dead , The Essential Salts , The Language of the Shadows and What Can Be Safely Written are allusions to the book Necronomicon: The Wanderings of Alhazred by Canadian occultist Donald Tyson , which in turn is based on HP Lovecraft's fictional Necronomicon is ajar.
The title Ithyphallic means "to have an erection " and is an allusion to the representation of the Egyptian fertility gods.
Laying Fire Upon Apep is a reference to one of the methods that Ra used to defeat Apep , as described in the Book of Apophis .
Papyrus Containing the Spell to Preserve Its Possessor Against Attacks From He Who Is in the Water refers to a spell from the Egyptian Book of the Dead .
The Essential Salts is a reference to both the table salt used to mummify pharaohs and HP Lovecraft's story The Case of Charles Dexter Ward .

"There had, it seems, been some truth in chimerical old Borellus when he wrote of preparing from even the most antique remains certain 'Essential Saltes' from which the shade of a long-dead living thing might be raised up."
"It seemed that old Borellus was not entirely wrong when he wrote that one could extract certain 'essential salts' even from the oldest mortal remains and awaken from them the shadow of a long-dead living being."
