Incantation is an American death metal band from Johnstown , Pennsylvania that was formed in 1989.

history

The band was founded in August 1989 by guitarist Brett Mackowski and bassist Aragon Amori, who previously played in a band at Blood Thirsty Death, as well as guitarist John McEntee and drummer Paul Ledney, who were already involved in their work Revenant knew. A first demo followed, which included a cover version of Hellhammer's The Third of the Storms , before Machowski, Amori and Ledney left the band to found Profanatica . The replacement was bassist Ronnie Deo, who became aware of the band through an advertisement in a local newspaper, as well as guitarist Sal Seijo and drummer Peter Barnevic. McEntee also briefly joined the band Mortician . In return, Mortician singer Will Rahmer joined the cast and was featured on the band's first EP, which was released via Seraphic Decay Records. Shortly after the recording, Seijo and Barnevic left the band. The new drummer was Jim Roe, who had reacted to an advertisement in the same local newspaper as before, while the new guitarist Bill Venner briefly joined the cast. Venner was replaced a little later by Craig Pillard, who took over the vocals in addition to the guitar. Split releases with Amorphis and Goreaphobia were announced for 1991, but were not to appear. The band signed a contract with Relapse Records and released their EP Entrantment of Evil , which was one of the label's first releases. With the new line-up, the debut album Onward to Golgotha followed in 1992 via Relapse Records , while the album was distributed in Europe by Nuclear Blast . This was followed by a tour together with Anal Cunt and Phlegm. After a tour through Canada and the USA, bassist Deo left the band in November 1992. A little later, Dan Kamp joined the line-up as the new bassist. During this time the band wrote a new album and also contributed the song Emaciated Holy Figure to the compilation Death Is Just the Beginning . In addition, the band held performances together with Autopsy , Vital Remains and Morgue . For personal reasons, Jim Roe left the band, who was shortly followed by Kamp. Around November 1993, bassist Dave Niederist and drummer John Brody joined the cast.

In early 1994 the band recorded their next album, whereupon Roe played the drums again so that Brody could prepare for the band's first European tour that followed. The album was released under the name Mortal Throne of Nazarene . The tour was then held together with Sinister and Dead Head . In July 1994, Craig Pillard left the band and was replaced by Duane Morris for the summer tour. Morris actually worked as a merchandiser on the tour. After the tour, all members except McEntee and Morris left the band. The two then moved from New Jersey to Cleveland , Ohio . There they met drummer Kyle Severn and a bass player. The latter got out before a tour together with Grave and Fear of God , so this was held without a bassist. At the beginning of 1995 Mike Donnelly joined the band as the new bass player. In the same year the album was released Upon the Throne of Apocalypse , the re-release of the album Mortal Throne of Nazarene was reverse playback order of the songs. After Donnelly joined, a tour with Immolation followed . After touring Mexico , Duane Morris left the band briefly, but returned in May for a three-month tour of Canada and the United States. During the tour, Morris left the band again, so Daniel Corchado came to the band. After the tour ended, he and Mike Donnelly left the band. In December 1995, Severn and McEntee decided to record a demo. Then the bassist Mary Ciullo and the guitarist Mike Saez joined the band. With this line-up, three appearances followed in the USA. In March 1996, Kevin Hughes joined the band as the new bass player, shortly followed by guitarist and singer Nathan Rossi. Many rehearsals followed in the summer before the band went on a US tour with Anal Cunt and Mortician and Rossi left the band again. On the mid-1997 EP The Forsaken Mourning of Angelic Anguish appeared Craig Pillard as the new singer. Pillard should also be heard on the EP Tribute to the Goat . Mike Saez, who meanwhile played bass, switched to the electric guitar on the subsequent tour, so that Daniel Corchado took over bass and vocals. During the tour, however, Saez dropped out, so Corchado switched to the electric guitar, so this tour was held again without a bassist. The following year, the album Diabolical Conquest followed through Relapse Records . Shortly after the release, bassist Robert Yench joined the band. During a tour together with Morbid Angel and Vader Corchada left the band, for which guitarist and singer Tom Stevens came to the band. Stevens was unable to take part in a tour of Canada because he was banned from crossing the border due to some criminal offenses, so Chris Dora stepped in for him. The band then played gigs in the United States. After a gig, the group's tour bus had an accident, with Severn and McEntee seriously injured. Then drummer Severn got out of the band, so he was replaced by Clay Lytle. McEntee then moved the band's headquarters to Johnstown, Pennsylvania. He then got to know Rick "Slim" Boast, so that he joined the band as the new drummer. This was followed by a US tour with Kristin and Angelcorpse . After the tour Boast left the band, so Chris Dora returned to the band, this time not as a singer. On the next tour, which began in mid-April 1999, Mark Perry was then represented as the new drummer. Perry also left the band shortly afterwards, followed by Tom Stevens. For performances in Argentina , Dora played the drums again, while Mike Saez took over the singing and playing the guitar. After the performances, work began on the next album, with Dave Culross as the new drummer. On the 2000 album The Infernal Storm , the group consisted of singer Mike Saez, drummer Dave Culross and bassist Yench. On the following tour Richard Christy (Ex- Death / Iced Earth ) was represented as the new drummer. Kyle Severn returned to the band in August 2000, before appearing with Nile and Impaled . This was followed by a concert with Goatwhore and Immolation. During the concert there was a knife fight in which Saez was injured. A concert in Brazil was then recorded and released in 2001 as a live album under the name Live - Blasphemy in Brazil Tour . In February 2001 the band announced their separation from Relapse Records and switched to Necropolis Records .

After the release of the live album, Yench left the band and was replaced in the same year by Joey Lombard, who should first be heard in 2002 on the album Blasphemy . After that, performances in Europe were planned, but Saez had to cancel them due to back problems. This was followed by US appearances along with Cannibal Corpse , Pissing Razors and Dark Funeral . The band played in Worcester that same year with Cannibal Corpse, Arch Enemy , Dark Funeral and Killswitch Engage . In early 2003, Saez left the band, whereupon John McEntee took over the vocals. After Lou "Sonny" Lombardozzi joined the group as the new guitarist, he performed with Pungent Stench , Beyond the Embrace and Rune . This was followed by appearances in Australia , with the members being slightly injured in a car accident. Then the band, now consisting of McEntee, Severn and Lombard, went into the studio to record the album Decimate Christendom . In the summer of 2004 she performed in Europe with Behemoth and Krisiun . This was followed by further appearances, with the entire group no longer able to play in Canada due to various legal problems. In 2005 the band held gigs in the US with Hate Eternal , Into Eternity and All Shall Perish . In addition, the band played other gigs this year, including an appearance at the Essen Zeche Carl together with Nile, Unleashed , Pungent Stench and Behemoth. In the summer the band went back to the studio, whereupon the recordings in the fall Primordial Domination was stopped. The album was released through Ibex Moon Records, the label founded by John McEntee in 2002.

In February 2007 there followed again appearances in Europe together with Carpathian Forest , Malevolent Creation , Rotting Christ and Neuraxis . The band played inter alia in food along with Rotting Christ, Malevolent Creation, Neuraxis, Harm , Mystic Circle and Inactive Messiah . After returning to the USA bassist Lombard left the band and was replaced by Roberto Lizarraga. Former bassist Dave Lombard passed away on January 3, 2012. In the same year the band signed a contract with Listenable Records and took part in the Summer Breeze . In the same year the album Vanquish was released in Vengeance on Listenable Records . The band currently consists of guitarist and singer John McEntee, drummer Kyle Severn, guitarist Alex Bouks and bassist Chuck Sherwood. In August 2013, a split was released with Archgoat via Nuclear War Now! Productions announced. The Archgoat part is supposed to come from the demo Jesus Spawn from 1991, while Incantation's page is supposed to consist of the demo from 1990 and previously unpublished recordings of their first appearance.

style

Mackowski and Amori, who later formed the black metal band Profanatica, were influenced by bands like Venom , Necrovore , Sarcófago and Bathory . Onward to Golgotha offered aggressive, monotonous Death Metal, comparable to the works of Suffocation . In Mortal Throne of Nazarene , the band played death metal, the influences from thrash metal and grindcore had. According to Martin Popoff, the aggressive, guttural singing is so incomprehensible that you cannot understand a word of it, even if you read the text along with it. The Forsaken Mourning of Angelic Anguish featured monotonous and aggressive Death Metal, with influences from Doom Metal . In addition, the extremely deeply tuned guitars and the deep guttural vocals reminding of old Cannibal Corpse were characteristic. Influences from Doom Metal were also audible on Diabolical Conquest . Otherwise, extremely aggressive and very fast played Death Metal dominated the album, comparable to the works of Immolation and Nile. Hardly anything changed on The Infernal Storm compared to its predecessor: The guttural vocals were extremely deep, while the songs fluctuated between slow and fast, grindcore-like parts. Decimate Christendom offered Death Metal, which fluctuated between fast-played, aggressive passages and slow, groovy parts. Also on the album Blasphemy was heard classical, anti-Christian death metal, with songs like His Weak Hand or Uprising Heresy reminiscent of Morbid Angel. At Vanquish in Vengeance , the band also played classic, aggressive Death Metal with Doom Metal influences. The extremely deep, elongated Growling recalled the ancient works of Cannibal Corpse. The lyrics of the songs are mostly blasphemous in nature.
