Immolation ( lat. , Sacrifice ') is an American death metal band from Yonkers , New York .

Band history

The band Immolation was formed in 1986 from the disbanded New York band Rigor Mortis. Guitarists Robert Vigna and Tom Wilkinson recruited drummer Neal Boback and bassist and singer Ross Dolan. After the band did not get a contract with Earache Records , the musicians worked harder for their goals and ultimately got a contract with Roadracer Records .

Shortly before the recordings for the debut album Dawn of Possessions , produced in Berlin with Harris Johns ( Voivod , Kreator ) , Boback left Immolation. He was replaced by Craig Smilowski. With this line-up, the band went on a promotional tour of Europe and the United States. Shortly after the tour, she ended the collaboration with Roadracer Records. In 1995 Repulse Records released Stepping on Angels… Before Dawn , a compilation of the first two demo discs, some live recordings and Rigor Mortis pieces. In 1996 the band switched to Metal Blade Records and released the album Here in After there . After touring with Cannibal Corpse , Smilowski was replaced by Alex Hernandez. Between 1996 and 1998 four more tours followed through the United States and Europe.

In 1998 the band recorded their third album Failures for Gods , which was released in 1999. After a few concerts with Six Feet Under , the fourth album Close to a World Below was released in 2000 . For the first concerts after the release, Robert Vigna was replaced by Incantation guitarist John McEntee, who was in turn replaced by Bill Taylor (ex Angel Corpse ) after Vigna's return .

After a successful European tour with Decapitated , Soul Demise and Deranged and a contract with Listenable Records , Immolation's fifth album Unholy Cult was released in 2002 , followed by several concerts with Mystic Circle and Deranged, as well as participation in the X-Mas Festival with Kataklysm , Marduk and Dying Fetus . Since Immolations drummer Alex Hernandez suffered a hernia , he was replaced by Steve Shalaty.

After their sixth album, Harnessing Ruin , released in 2005, according to the Immolation biography on Nuclear Blast , the band went on tour with Deicide , Skinless and Misery Index , which was followed by a break. After a few concerts with Exodus and Cryptopsy , their eighth album Shadows in the Light was released in 2007 . After the release, the band played a few festivals and toured the United States with Rotting Christ and Belphegor . In 2010, the album Majesty and Decay was released on Immolation's new record company Nuclear Blast. In 2011 the EP Providence was released , which is available as a free download.

Style and texts

Immolation's style is often compared to Morbid Angel 's; Ross Dolan takes the comparison as a compliment, but emphasizes that Immolation's style and sound are clearly different from the Morbid Angels. However, the band, along with Necrophagia and the early works of Death , Sepultura and Possessed, is one of Immolation's influences. Her record company Nuclear Blast counts her with bands like Incantation , Mortician and Suffocation to the "top of the New York Death Metal scene". The lyrics of the band are characterized by anti-Christian content, but go beyond that.
