Suffocation is a New York- based death metal band founded in 1990 . She was one of the first bands to mix Death Metal with New York Hardcore and Grindcore and is considered the founder of Brutal Death Metal.

In addition, she is one of the founding members of the New York Death Metal scene, which has its very own style and, like New York Hardcore, has become a trademark of the New York music scene.

They are one of the most influential bands in death metal, but nu-metal bands like Slipknot also refer to suffocation as an important influence.

history

The band was founded in 1990. A short time later they released the first and only demo and immediately got a contract with the until then very small label Relapse Records . Suffocation was the first band to release a CD on Relapse Records. After this release, the band got a contract with the much larger label Roadrunner Records .

When Death Metal didn't sell that well anymore, Roadrunner Records also parted with Suffocation. When there were also casting problems, the band members decided to go their separate ways.

In 1998, tried again a fresh start with their own label Vulture Records and published EP Despise the Sun .

Only in 2004, shortly after the singer Frank Mullen separated from his wife, the band found their way back to their old strength and released their album Souls to Deny on the label Relapse Records, which has grown considerably in the meantime. The album was recorded without a real bass player, so Hobbs and Smith shared the task.

Founding member Mike Smith left Suffocation again in February 2012 . He left the band for the first time in 1994 and returned in 2002. As a reason for the renewed separation, the band gave personal differences. He was replaced by Dave Culross , who had already worked as a session drummer for Suffocation.

The band played in a promotional film on the History Channel , where a report of the Dark Ages (German: ' Dark ages ') is advertised with. The advertisement has been shown since 2007. You can hear the song Bind Torture Kill from the album Suffocation .
