Mike Smith (drummer)
Mike Smith (born July 1970 ) is an American death metal - drummer from New York City . He was best known for his work with the influential death metal band Suffocation , of which he was a member from 1990 to 1993. He then got out of the band and came back to the band almost ten years later in 2002. During his absence, Dough Bohn and later Dave Culross took his place at Suffocation. In 2007 Smith played as a guest drummer on the song Suffocated to Death by God's Shadow by the American rapper Necro , which was released on the album Death Rap .
Suffocation was best known for Mike Smith's specific drumming. He combines blast beats with dragging drum passages. His unmistakable way of playing influenced Joey Jordison from Slipknot (according to interview statements by Jordison) in a special way, as did many other drummers from Death Metal to Nu Metal .
