Tsambika ( Greek Μοναστήρι Τσαμπίκα "Monastery Tsambika") is a monastery on Rhodes . It is located on the east coast between Kolymbia and Archangelos at about 220 meters above sea level. The monastery is dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary , who is celebrated on her name day , September 8th , with the participation of the population from all parts of the island.

The outer walls of the monastery building erected at the end of the 19th century limit an area of 17 × 8 meters. It is vaulted and has a two-aisled, flat gable roof. At the west-facing entrance there is an iconostasis with decorations of very good quality. The central figure of Christ shows the inscription "ΗΓΟΥΜΕΝΕΥΟΝΤΟΣ ΙΕΡΟΜΟΝΑΧΟΥ ΑΝΘΙΜΟΥ ΕΚ ΤΗΣ ΑΡΧΑΓΓΕΛΟΥ 1886".

Legend about the foundation

Modern church below the monastery where the icon is kept today

Fishermen are said to have found an icon on the Tsambique beach . The men searched all over the Byzantine Empire for their owner. They discovered that this icon had disappeared from a church in Cyprus and brought it back there. The fishermen could not believe their eyes, because the next day they found the icon again on the Tsambique beach.

This happened several times. The icon is said to have told the fisherman that he should build a church for her on the mountain. Since the way there was very steep, he built a church down in the valley and placed the icon there. Today this church is called Kato (from Greek κάτω káto , German “below” ) Tsambika. But the next day the icon was gone again. Again she was found by the fisherman and again expressed the wish to stand in a church on the mountain. Since it was very difficult to carry the stones and building materials up the hill, all residents of the area, including the childless women, had to help. When the monastery was finished, these women miraculously became pregnant.

So it was decided that these children should be named after the icon "Tsambika" (girl) or "Tsambikos" (boy). This is a name found only in families from Rhodes in Greece .

The Tsambika monastery probably developed into a pilgrimage destination for women who want to have children because of this legend. Legend has it that women who want to have children have to walk barefoot from Kato Tsambika up to Tsambika Monastery and pray to the Virgin Mary in the church in order to have their wish for children fulfilled within a year.
