Archangelos ( Greek Αρχάγγελος ( m. Sg. ), "Archangel" after the Archangel Michael , patron saint of the place) is a municipality with about 7800 inhabitants on the east coast of the Greek island of Rhodes , about 35 kilometers south of Rhodes (city) , and the Name of the main town. Despite its proximity to the sea (a few hundred meters as the crow flies), the place is not directly on the coast, but at a height of 160 m at the rear of a rock massif and cannot be seen from the sea. This location was chosen to hide the settlement from the eyes of pirates. The municipality also includes the villages of Malonas and Masari in an adjacent river valley.
Until the administrative reform in 2010 , Archangelos formed an independent municipality and has since had the status of a municipality. The former municipal districts now form urban districts.
Archangelus
Archangelos is known for its agriculture ( citrus fruits and olives ) and its handicrafts; especially ceramics , traditional shoe production and carpet weaving are famous on Rhodes. The tourism plays a small but increasing role.
The bell tower of the Agios Archangelos church, built in 1845 under Italian rule at the beginning of the 20th century, as well as the fort built between 1454 and 1476 by the Knights of St. John , as well as the 5-7 m high wall and the small chapel Agios Ioannis inside, are worth seeing only ruins have survived. During the military dictatorship, the Greek word “ Greek όχι ” (“no”) was written on the outer wall of the fort and can still be read today.
Although Archangelos is a city by Greek standards with more than 5000 inhabitants, it still has the character of a village. It is a lively place with numerous restaurants, taverns and cafes. A number of shops offer all everyday items from children's clothing to electronic devices and of course the products of local handicrafts. For medical care, however, you usually have to go to the island's capital, Rhodes.
There are several beaches nearby, such as Stegna and Tsambika below the Tsambika monastery . Due to the difference in altitude and the high temperatures during the holiday season, the beaches are best reached by car.
