Belphegor is a Founded in 1991 death metal - band from Salzburg , Austria . The band was named after the demon Belphegor from Jewish and medieval demonology .

history

The band was founded in 1991 under the name Betrayer and released the demos Kruzifixion and Unborn Blood , where they were strongly based on Death and Thrash Metal . Since there were already several bands with this name, it was renamed Belphegor. Their first album The Last Supper brought the band out on Lethal Records , the two follow-up albums on Last Episode ; In retrospect, the band called their collaboration with Last Episode a "shitty chapter" and accused the label of lacking support. This did not want to bring out the album Necrodaemon Terrorsathan according to the wishes of the band; with the cover, on which a woman practices sexual intercourse with a billy goat (“In Austria, a white cover sheet with our logo prevents you from looking directly at the cover”), and the label did not agree to the publication of the texts. The album is a continuation of the predecessor Blutsabbath , which should also be made clear by the rainfalls as a link between the two albums.

After releasing the live album Infernal Live Orgasm on his own label Phallelujah Productions, Belphegor moved to Napalm Records . Because of the album Lucifer incestus , an indexing process was initiated, which was discontinued by the eight-member committee. According to metal.de, the application for indexing came from the “Catholic-Bavarian” youth welfare office and was therefore interpreted as coming from the clergy. The band is now under contract with Nuclear Blast , which, according to Helmuth, was the first record company from which the band was treated well; Legal action has been taken against Napalm Records.

In January 2006, Barth had an accident in which his right hand was injured. After the operation it was unclear whether he could get back on as a bassist. At concerts he was temporarily replaced by the German bass player AX. The split single with Abscess , announced by Helmuth in 2005 for February 1, 2006, was never released.

In spring 2008 guitarist Sigurd had to take a break for health reasons; he was replaced by Morluch.

The recordings of the successor to Bondage Goat Zombie began in early 2009 and ended in June of that year. In between, the band played concerts on their tour through Scandinavia, the USA and Canada.

The next album Walpurgis Rites - Hexenwahn was released on October 9th in Europe and on October 20th in the US via Nuclear Blast; A music video was shot on the title Der Geistertreiber , which can be found on the digipak version of the album.

Between June and October 2010 the album Blood Magick Necromance was recorded in the Abyss Studio with Peter Tägtgren . The album was released across Europe on January 14, 2011.

In October 2011 the band announced on their official website that singer and guitarist Helmuth had to undergo a "serious and difficult operation". Because of this, all planned performances were canceled until May 2012. Belphegor has been playing live again since August 2012.

On August 8, 2014, the album Conjuring the Dead was released by Nuclear Blast Europe.

A new album, titled Death Ritual , has been announced for September 2017. The album picture was painted by Seth Siro Anton , who was already responsible for the previous one.

style

Belphegor's music mixes black and death metal influences with different weightings depending on the album; However, Helmuth refuses to give his music a style name and leaves this to others. The lyrics deal with topics like violence and blasphemy , but Belphegor was never a satanist band, as Helmuth emphasizes; Instead, the musicians are "enemies of the cross "; Barth describes religion as "a tool to keep the masses in check", "opium for the people" and "slavery", which Belphegor despises, and calls for the gallows for " priests and moral apostles". Regarding the image, Helmuth said that it was "not misogynistic - maybe macho-like ", and that "tits, death and the devil belong to BELPHEGOR, like the amen in the church".
