The studio specializes in all production steps in a music production, so both the recordings and the mixing and mastering are carried out. It is run by Peter Tägegren . The main clientele consists of metal bands.
history
Abyss Studio was founded in Stockholm in 1994. A year later, Peter Tägegren moved to the site of an abandoned psychiatric clinic in Pärlby. The institute was founded after the First World War for mentally disturbed elderly people. It forms the village center of Pärlby. There are several smaller houses around the building in which the former employees and carers lived.
At the end of the 1980s, the institution was closed by the government and converted into a refugee / asylum seeker home. After only three years of use, the home was abandoned and the houses with the apartments they built were sold and rented out. Tägegren and his wife at the time rented one of the apartments and one of the houses that housed the music studio. For a long time the property was considered cursed. Several books have been written about the institution and even former employees reported ghost visions. In the following years, too, some bands and musicians, including Dimmu Borgir and Marduk , reported on haunted stories. The former dark funeral singer, Masse "Emperor Magus Caligula" Broberg, even refused to sleep in the building.
Until the end of the 90s, the studio was constantly expanding. In the late 1990s, the associated rise in rental costs prompted Tägtgren to take out a loan and buy the house in which the studio was located. The remaining houses were owned by a condominium agency based in Stockholm, for whom the houses were just a nuisance because they could not be sold. Because of this, Tägegren received a good offer to buy the house, which he accepted. Nowadays, a large part of the houses is rented out again by Tägtgren.
At the end of 2001, Tägegren planned to close the Abyss Studio, as he was disappointed and angry that he was being "abused" by parts of the metal scene as a "landmark" for selling albums. In an interview with the webzine Bravewords.com , he said:
“I'm closing down Abyss Studios because of me. [...] I am not a fucking trademark, I am not a selling point. Fuck everything. I don't want to be a part of that shit, no matter how much money I make or how much money I get for having my name on a CD for doing this and that. Fuck that; that's not what I'm about and I've never been about that. I've just been very fortunate to have all these bands coming into my studio, and fortunate enough to have these bands sell a lot of records, but now I'm doing Hypocrisy and Pain 100%. I'm not going to produce anymore because it's fucking shit. It's just a fucking industry and I don't want to be a part of it. It feels like a soap opera. "
“I have decided to close the Abyss Studio. [...] I'm not a damned trademark and not a sales pitch either. Fuck everything. I don't want to be part of all this crap no matter how much money I make or how much money I get to have my name on a CD or to do this and that. Fuck it, it's not me and I never wanted to be. I'm just lucky that all of these bands come to my studio and then also sell a lot of CDs. I will now focus 100% on Hypocrisy and Pain . I won't produce anymore because it sucks. It's just a fucking industry and I don't want to be part of it. It feels like a soap opera . "
In the year 2002 Tägegren actually only produced one Hypocrisy album and only gradually began to produce again for other bands in 2003. Unlike before, he no longer wants to be booked regularly and doesn't want to work for all bands, but “only for bands that [he] knows very well and whose songs [he] thinks so good that [he] absolutely does produce wool ”.
Nowadays the core of the Abyss Studio is the 150 m² recording studio in the former institution.
