October Tide is a Swedish death-doom band from Stockholm , which was founded in 1995, disbanded in 1999 and has been active again since 2009.

history

The band was founded in 1995 by Katatonia members Jonas Renkse and Fredrik Norrman, after Katatonia briefly split up. In the same year they recorded a first demo, whereupon Renkse took over the drums, the electric guitar and the vocals and Norrman played the bass and the electric guitar. Although the Katatonia project continued a short time later, they decided not to end October Tide. In 1997 they both signed a contract with Vic Records , which resulted in their debut album Rain Without End . Another album followed two years later with Gray Dawn , on which Mårten Hansen ( This Ending ) could be heard as a singer. The band remained largely unnoticed, however, as there were no interviews or concerts, whereupon it was initially decided not to pursue the band project.

Only in 2009 did Norrman revive the band, after which the line-up consisted of the singer Tobias Netzell, the bassist Pierre Stam (both In Mourning ), the guitarist Emil Alstermark and the drummer Robin Bergh (ex- Amaran ). In March of the same year, Rain Without End was re-released via Candlelight Records . The album was also remastered by Dan Swanö . After the band was re-founded, the band also recorded the album A Thin Shell , which was also released in October 2010 on Candlelight Records. The album was recorded at Black Lounge Studios under the direction of producer Jonas Kjellgren ( Scar Symmetry ), while the cover was designed by Travis Smith . During the recordings, Kjellgren also played the bass. Since Norrman was now out of Katatonia, he could concentrate more on October Tide. The publication was followed by concerts and festival appearances for the first time, including in Finland , Spain , Ireland and Slovenia . At the beginning of 2012, Stam and Netzell left the band and were replaced by bassist Mattias "Kryptan" Norrman, brother of Frederik and also a Katatonia member, and singer Alexander Högbom. With this new line-up, the album Tunnel of No Light followed in mid-April 2013 . The album was recorded at Black Lounge Studios in autumn 2012. The fifth album Winged Waltz was released on April 22, 2016 .

style

According to laut.de , the band on Rain Without End plays a mixture of Gothic , Doom and Death Metal. Eduardo Rivadavia of Allmusic found that the music hardly differs from the Death Doom of Katatonia. Janne Stark described in The Heaviest Encyclopedia of Swedish Hard Rock and Heavy Metal Ever! the band's music as symphonic hard rock with vocals reminding of death metal. In addition, the band Death Doom play with Gothic Metal influences, comparable to bands like Katatonia, Swallow the Sun and My Dying Bride . Martin Popoff described the music on Gray Dawn in his book The Collector's Guide of Heavy Metal Volume 3: The Nineties as Doom Metal with death metal vocals and drew a comparison to Katatonia.

Robert Müller from Metal Hammer compared Rain Without End with the Katatonia album Dance of December Souls , as there is a "well-known mixture of reverberant resentment singing , catchy minor guitars and bombastic arrangements". In addition, one occasionally uses a violin . According to Christian Kruse, you can also hear clear parallels to old Katatonia releases on A Thin Shell . The band play an atmospheric mix of death and doom metal with slightly progressive tendencies. According to Martin Wickler from Metal Hammer , the band also plays a mixture of Doom and Death Metal on Tunnel of No Light , although the music now tends a little more towards Doom Metal. In addition to Katatonia, Wickler used Ghost Brigade , My Dying Bride and Black Sun Aeon as comparison bands.
