Swallow the Sun is a Finnish Death Doom Metal - band . Their music is melancholy / dark and has a strongly varying tempo.
Band history
Swallow the Sun was founded by Juha Raivio in the fall of 2000. Soon Pasi Pasanen also joined the band, because the two already knew each other from the band Plutonium Orange . In 2001 Markus Jämsen joined as the second guitarist and Mikko Kotamäki as the singer. Keyboarder Aleksi Munter and bassist Matti Honkonen completed the band. In the fall of 2002 they wrote songs for the first demo , which was recorded in January 2003. The recordings took place in Sam's workshop with Sami Kokko, who was also responsible for mixing the demo.
A few months later, Swallow the Sun was signed to Firebox Records and began recording their first album, The Morning Never Came , in July 2003 . Their second album followed in 2005 with Ghosts of Loss . The resulting single Forgive Her… entered the Finnish charts at number 4 in the week of its release. The album reached number 8.
In mid-2006 they switched to the Spinefarm Records label and went on a tour through Europe. On February 16, 2007 the third album was released with Hope . A tour through Europe and appearances at several summer festivals followed in the spring. In 2008 Swallow the Sun released the EP Plague of Butterflies , with which it reached number 1 in the Finnish charts for the first time.
In the spring of 2009, Swallow the Sun toured North America. A few weeks later, in May 2009, Pasi Pasanen left the band by mutual agreement due to lack of motivation and founded Sons of Aeon in 2010 . For the upcoming appearances and recordings for the next album he was replaced by Kai Hahto .
On February 2, 2012, Swallow the Sun released their 5th album Emerald Forest and the Blackbird , which reached number 2 in the Finnish charts.
In 2013, the band celebrated the 10th anniversary of their debut album The Morning Never Came with a special tour that played the album in full. For the tour, Kai Hahto was replaced by Juuso Raatikainen.
At the end of 2014, Kai Hahto completely resigned as a drummer for the next few years, as his engagement with Nightwish required too much time to play for Swallow The Sun at the same time. He was replaced by Juuso Raatikainen.
Since May 2015 the band has been working on their 6th studio album, Songs from the North . The album was released on November 13 under Century Media Records and consists of three separate albums. While the first album sounds classically like Swallow the Sun, the second is a purely acoustic album and the third covers dark funeral doom metal.
In 2019 the 7th studio album When a Shadow Is Forced into the Light was released , which was heavily influenced by personal strokes of fate: Aleah Stanbridge, long-time partner of lead guitarist Juha Raivio, died on April 18, 2016 of complications from cancer. For Raivio, who wrote music and lyrics himself except for the song "Clouds on Your Side", the album was a way of overcoming his grief and fighting his way back to life. The title is a quote from the song "Broken Mirrors" by the band Trees of Eternity , in which Starbridge was active as a singer until her death.
