action
" Joel Larsen is 14 today. The problem is, he was 34 yesterday "
34-year-old unmarried paper merchant Joel Larsen lives with his drug addict sister Cheryl and father Bill. One day when Bill injured himself while making a toast and an ambulance arrives, Cheryl holds the defibrillator to Joel's temple for fun and triggers it. Joel eventually wakes up in his 14 year old body. This gives him the chance to completely change his life, save his parents' marriage and save his sister from a drug career. Only his best friend Pat is let in on the secret of his journey through time. Another support for Joel is his best friend Isabelle, who knows nothing about his origins, but supports his plans to become head boy.
Joel has many possibilities to use his future knowledge. So he tries to acquire Intel shares (episode 3) and sells songs from the 1990s as his own: He sings Good Riddance (Time Of Your Life) from Green Day (episode 8) at a school festival and is even supposed to compete in Star Search . He also submits Smells Like Teen Spirit by Nirvana as a poem and adds the motto The Dead Poets Club “ Carpe Diem ” to his head boy speech (episode 1). Joel's mother, Karen, often comes up with ideas that Joel knows will be commercially successful in the future. Among other things, coffee shops (episode 1), lunch tables , post-its , the adjustable dog leash and the bum bag (both episode 10). But while Joel tries to support her in her endeavors, his father always discourages her, so that she never presents one of her ideas to the public.
Ambiguity regarding the year
It is clear that the Joel comes from the future, the year 2002. However, there are different details about the year in which he is traveling back. The opening credits imply that Joel travels back from 2002 to 1980. In a dialogue in Episode 1 Everything at the Beginning ( Pilot ) Joel replies when asked what year he is in, but "2002" is corrected by his trainer, who says it is in 1981. According to Joel's age Judging, it would make the most sense to travel back from 2002 to 1982 since he's 34 and 14.

Reviews
- "With their time travel to the 80s, the author duo created a funny teenage comedy about dates, parents and school, peppered with the clumsiness of a failed adult - swipes at the pop culture of the 80s included!"
- "The ultimate wish-fulfillment comedy, Do Over proves that sometimes it does take a boy to do a man's job."
- " Do Over is a mild family comedy (despite coarse language from the boorish dad) with a wholesome message. Trapped in 1981, Joel sees a chance to save his parents' marriage and turn into a better man this time around. The visual jokes (that early Madonna look) are as predictable as the sticky sentiments, but the show is made watchable by an engaging cast, especially Penn Badgley as Joel and Josh Wise as his confidant, Pat, a guy with green hair who is horrified at Joel's news from the future: You're a Republican.
