My Dying Bride ( . English , My Dying Bride ') is a British doom metal - band from Halifax , West Yorkshire , which was founded in 1990.

history

In the 1990s they were part of the so-called "Big Three" of Doom Metal along with Paradise Lost and Anathema , all of whom were signed to Peaceville Records . My Dying Bride have been with this label the longest at 25 years of age and are the only ones of these three bands that have remained loyal to Doom Metal to this day.

Her style is initially deeply rooted in Death Metal ; Their first EP Symphonaire Infernus Et Spera Empyrium , released by Peaceville in 1991 , became an influential work in the death-doom scene and, alongside the early works of Paradise Lost, is considered to be groundbreaking for Gothic Metal . At the time, My Dying Bride was influenced by Gothic-Rock and Neoclassical groups such as Fields of the Nephilim and Dead Can Dance , which they repeatedly emphasized in their earlier interviews. Andrew Craighan even described the track Le Cerf Malade from the 1992 EP The Thrash of Naked Limbs as "My Dying Brides Version of Dead Can Dance" . The Belgian ritual industrial formation The Hybryds served as further inspiration . Particularly characteristic was the use of a violinist, such as was used in the Gothic environment of the early 1980s (e.g. on Morbid Silence by Sunglasses After Dark, 1984).

Even though we had Gothic components in our music, we were more oriented towards Death Metal and Metal. [...] But maybe we already suspected at the time that Gothic would one day be an equal element of our music. "

- Andrew Craighan, 1995

On their second album, Turn Loose the Swans (1993), My Dying Bride incorporated clear vocals into their music for the first time, the Death Metal echoes largely disappeared and gave way to a style more oriented towards the slowness and gloom of Doom Metal. The following two albums continued this style and represented a consequent further development, whereby the death grunts were completely omitted and the overall mood became more relaxed, romantic and thoughtful. My Dying Bride reached the climax of this development with the album The Angel and the Dark River .

After the fourth album, Like Gods of the Sun , Martin Powell, the violinist, left the band. Then in 1998 the album 34.788%… Complete was released , a rather experimental work that had little in common with the usual style of the band. It was based on a more groovy, harder rock that spreads more fun than sadness with dark elements and the still typical vocals, a pure trip-hop song is also represented; the text content has changed from despair and loss to lonely losers, sex and drugs.

In 1999, My Dying Bride returned to the style of Turn Loose the Swans with The Light at the End of the World , combining doomy accompaniment, clear chants and growls, and again using darker lyrics. The distinctive violin was replaced by an increased use of keyboards. The band continued on this path with their next two albums. In 2006, drummer Shaun Steels had to give up his post for health reasons. In October of the same year, the album A Line of Deathless Kings was released. John Bennet then took over the drums, but left the band again in early 2007 and was replaced by Dan Mullins. Bassist and founding member Adrian Jackson also ended his work with My Dying Bride at this time. His successor was Lena Abé. Keyboard player Sarah Stantons took a musical break in June 2008 due to her pregnancy. She was replaced by Katie Stone. She played live and on the album For Lies I Sire , which was released in March 2009, in addition to the keyboards and violin. Katie left the band after a short time and was replaced by Shaun Macgowan.

On the occasion of the band's 20th anniversary, the album Evinta was released in 2011 , for which familiar melodies and themes from the band's history were taken up again and reworked in symphonic form. The album was created in collaboration with Bal Sagoth keyboarder Johnny Maudling. In November 2011 an EP was released with the title The Barghest o'Withby , in October 2012 the studio album A Map of All Our Failures was released .

In June 2014, the band announced that they had separated from longtime guitarist Hamish Glencross, whose predecessor and founding member Calvin Robertshaw came back to replace him. With this line-up, the band released the album Feel the Misery in September 2015 . In December 2018, the band announced the split from drummer Shaun Steels. He was replaced by Jeff Singer, the former Paradise Lost drummer.

style

Aaron Stainthorpe emphasized that My Dying Bride "[o] without bands like Bathory , Celtic Frost , Candlemass or Sodom [...] did not exist". He "fell in love immediately" when he "heard Bathory for the first time in a club in Yorkshire"; Quorthon has attended a few My Dying Bride concerts, but “unfortunately he never met him. It breaks my heart now that he's dead. I would have liked to thank him for his music ... ”While listening to Celtic Frost's Dawn of Megiddo from the album To mega therion , he said that he“ wasn't even aware of how much we copied from Celtic Frost ”. However, the band does not feel tied to any particular genre:

We never thought about whether we wanted to do metal, gothic or a mixture of both. We just did what we enjoyed on every album. [...] As a rule, we have a specific set of topics that we cover: sex, death and religion. From this area, with which we are confronted day in and day out, many different stories can be told without us being forced to suck any mystical stories out of our fingers. We try to treat them with respect and a certain seriousness that unfortunately many bands lack. "
