Mithotyn was a Swedish Viking metal band.

Band history

Although the band was founded as Cerberus in August 1992, no album was released until 1997. After the founding members Schütz and Weinerhall changed their band name to Mithotyn in February 1993, Larsson and Beckmann joined them in the summer of 1993, with whom the first demo was recorded. In May 1994 singer Helene Blad, the sister of Mathias Blad von Falconer , joined the band before the next demo was recorded two months later.

In November Schütz left the band. As a replacement came Martinsson, with whom the band recorded their third demo in April 1995. After that, Blad left the band because of creative differences. Although the band subsequently received a number of offers from record companies, they turned them all down as they were supposedly too unprofitable. Instead, a new demo - Promo '96 - was recorded which allowed them to land a deal with Invasion Records .

In April 1997, the debut album In the Sign of the Ravens was released , followed a year later by King of the Distant Forest and again a year later by Gathered Around the Oaken Table , before the band split up in 1999.

The main reason Weinerhall cites today is the poor sales of the last album, which he attributes to a lack of support from their former label. Furthermore, the band lost their record deal and their own musical interest developed away from the previous style. Then guitarist Stefan Weinerhall founded the band Falconer , in which drummer Larsson also plays.

Music genre

Mithotyn's style consisted of very melodic guitar playing, heavy keyboard use and guttural screaming , the music was comparable to Summoning , In Flames and Satyricon , but according to the Tales of the Macabre "even more clichéd" and "too cheesy with all these melodic overdoses".
