Summoning (English, invocation ') is an Austrian metal - band . The demos and the debut album Lugburz were still influenced by traditional Black Metal , but the later releases are far more epic, experimental and keyboard-heavy .

history

Foundation and early publications

Summoning was founded in 1993 by Michael "Silenius" Gregor, Richard "Protector" Lederer and Alexander "Trifixion" Trondl . Protector was already the drummer in the thrash metal band Marlignom and had studied at a music school for four years. Silenius played in the doom metal band Shadow Vale and Cromm, together with Ray "Pazuzu" Wells. Trifixion played in the band Pervertum.

Summoning recorded two demos ( Upon the Viking's Stallion , Anno Mortiri Domini and a promo by Lugburz ), as well as a split album with Wells' project Pazuzu . Almost all of the titles in the demos never appeared on CD , and a few were used in later releases with some changes.

The demos sold well in a Viennese record store called Why not . Later Silenius came into contact with Thomas "TT" Tannenberger and became the singer of his band Abigor , whereupon some fanzines falsely referred to Summoning as a Silenius or Abigor side project, to the annoyance of the Abigor members. When Abigor got a contract with the young label Napalm Records , Silenius took the opportunity to get a contract for Summoning as well. In 1995 the first studio album Lugburz was released . Protector took over the keyboard and guitar, Silenius took over the vocals, bass and also a keyboard. Trifixion was the last active drummer. Additional vocals and most of the lyrics came from Pazuzu. Lugburz was still very much based on traditional Black Metal, unlike the upcoming releases. In 1995, Silenius announced that future releases would be more keyboard-dominated and bombastic. The band will not recruit a new drummer and produce drums and percussion synthetically. In addition, she wanted to move away from a typical metal drumming and orientate herself on a percussion more oriented towards Dead Can Dance . However, the riffs on the keyboard were already created at this point, before Silenius played them on the bass and then the guitar runs for them.

Musical development from Minas Morgul

Trifixion got out of the band after a dispute and the band consequently left the Austrian Black Metal Syndicate (ABMS), which some supporters took as "betrayal"; Hagen, singer of the Werwolf group, attacked the Summoning and Abigor im Ablaze groups sharply, called Silenius a “fairy tale” and gave him the tip not to “get in his way”. Protector and Silenius continued as a duo and waived a replacement. The drums have been played on the keyboard since the album Minas Morgul , which is often mistakenly mistaken for a drum computer , which made a significant contribution to the great epic sound of the music. The music became slower and more atmospheric. The guitar was only used in the background and the keyboard as a guiding instrument. That is why the fans claim with a wink that Minas Morgul is the "true" debut album. This style was consistently developed in the following albums, which were highly praised by both fans and the scene media. Dol Guldur appeared in 1996, and parallels to Protector's dark electro project Ice Ages can be seen. The lyrics were created after JRR Tolkien , who was specially named; Protector emphasizes that the band members "see and feel themselves as composers and not as poets". In 1997 the EP Nightshade Forests was released in the format of a mini CD , on the remaining material from Dol Guldur was used.

After that there were initially no publications from Summoning or from one of the side projects. It wasn't until 1999 that they came back with Stronghold and a slight change in style. The guitars took on a bigger role than before, while the keyboard took a back seat, but by and large the style was retained. Tania Borsky ( The Exiled Children of Eve ) helped out as a singer.

In 2001, Let Mortal Heroes Sing Your Fame was released . This album was musically classified between the new and the old style of the band. The polyphonic playing of the keyboard and the rockier guitar style made the music much more complex. Spoken passages gave the music a dramatic effect. For the title Farewell , choirs were used for the first time . In addition to Tolkien's Middle-earth themes, inspirations from Michael Moorcock were implemented. In 2003 another EP called Lost Tales was released , on which there is a title originally written for the side project Mirkwood and another unreleased Dol Guldur recording.

In 2006 the next studio album, Oath Bound, was released with completely new material. The band members justified the long break between the albums with personal problems and a lack of ideas. Playing the guitars is described as a calm arpeggio style. The band had better equipment available, which gave the music a more atmospheric sound and enabled better choirs. This was followed by another longer break, the lack of ideas of the musicians led, according to Silenius, at times to the idea of dissolving Summoning. Silenius and Protector devoted themselves to other musical projects in the following years. After Silenius suffered a heart attack , there followed a long recovery period, during which time he decided to reactivate Summoning. On February 19, 2012, Summoning announced a new album on their homepage for the end of 2012. The album should contain an unreleased track from the Oath Bound session. In addition, due to the abundance of new compositions, a limited fan edition with bonus titles has been announced. The seventh studio album, Old Mornings Dawn , was finally released on June 7, 2013 on Napalm Records.

Side projects

Protector is also a member of The Banished Children of Evas and Ice Ages. Silenius also plays with Amestigon and Kreuzweg Ost , among others . He played for Abigor until 1999 . In 1995 they both founded the Grabesmond project, which was later continued by Lucia-Mariam Fåroutan on his own. Silenius also founded the one-man project Mirkwood , whose music he makes available for free download on Summoning's website.
