Amestigon is an Austrian black metal band.

history

The band was founded in 1993 by Tharen and Thurisaz. In addition to them, other members of the Abigor band were regularly involved in the recordings. The band began their career with the two cassette demos Mysterious Realms (with Thomas "TT" Tannenberger from Abigor on drums) and Through the Ages We Preserve ... (with Hrim as drummer). In 1996 Amestigon made her debut with Napalm Records and recorded a split CD with the Austrian band Angizia . The first three songs on this split CD ( Challerian's Fall , Samhein , Mysterious Realms ) were recorded with Hrim on drums, the last track ( Stormlord ) with TT. In 1997 the band split up after the completion of the mini-CD Höllentanz for personal reasons and due to casting problems.

1998 Tharen continued the band; Mr. Wolf joined in the winter of 1998, shortly afterwards Michael “Silenius” Gregor (Abigor, Summoning ) and Lanz completed the cast; Thurisaz left the band and took over vocals and bass with Abigor. The band released a promo CD in 2000 with the title Remembering Ancient Origins with previously unreleased tracks from 1995 to 1999. This edition was limited to 100 copies and was self-published .

In 2002 the band released another split CD with Hellbound , entitled Nebelung, 1384 and released by the Millennium Metal Music label.

In May 2009 the debut album Sun of All Suns was completed, which was released in January 2010 via Hau Ruck! appeared. Silenius von Summoning and Albin Julius von Der Blutharsch , where Lanz is also involved, were involved as guest musicians on this album .

style

The band is often seen as Abigor's "little brother" because of the overlap in terms of both personal and style. On the earlier releases a raw guitar sound with strongly emphasized treble frequencies is used, together with the melodies played on the higher strings the result is the shrill sound that is characteristic of Amestigon and Abigor. The drumming is far more detailed than usual in Black Metal. For a change, atmospheric elements such as acoustic guitars, natural samples and clear vocals are incorporated. Keyboard passages recorded by Tharen are mainly used for intros and outros.

According to Steve Hoeltzel from Chronicles of Chaos, Amestigon play “Black Metal as it should be, icy, uncomplicated and dark” on Hellentanz ; he compared the music to the painful and melancholy core of Abigor's early recordings. The style is not exactly unique, but it sounds genuine. Herjulf from Vönger Musikmagazin also compared the title track of Höllentanz with Abigor. He praised the change between blastbeat parts and heroic melodies, but also criticized the lack of imagination of some songs and described the EPs Höllentanz , of which he only liked the title track, and Remembering Ancient Origins as half-baked mini-CDs; However, "with a little effort, more could have been gotten out of the - not bad - material". Florian Dammasch from metal.de also wrote that the band was “not that far from ABIGOR musically and ideally”.

In the course of time the band developed their own style, so the sound became darker, the guitars on the debut album Sun of All Suns contain more mid and bass frequencies: The sound no longer has the "ultraviolent transistor orgy of the old recordings" a lot to do, but is still described as "rough". The title track with its "introverted and intense atmosphere" was named as the highlight of this album. The band states on their website that they have other musical influences besides Black Metal; Accordingly, the album offers "a lot of semi-acoustic, solos on the clear bass, wobbling synthesizer ambience, choirs, dynamic arrangements, almost percussive drums - altogether rather untypical for a black metal troupe and clearly tending towards Doom and PostRock ". Thematically, the album is located between occultism and "ethics of cruelty, sociopathy and abuse".
