The blood ass (' coagulated blood ', ' scab ' or a term for irregular federal mercenaries around 1500) was an Austrian music project by the musician Albin Sunlight Julius, which was founded in Vienna in 1997 and ended in 2010. Julius initially referred to his music as “ Military Pop ” - a mixture of fragments from old marches , Neofolk elements, industrial borrowings and electronic samples . But since 2005 the band stood for psychedelic rock .

A peculiarity of the publications of Der Blutharsch is that until 2011 only the EPs and albums, but not the individual tracks, have titles.

Band history

The Blood Ass was originally a side project of The-Moon-Lay-Hidden-Beneath-a-Cloud member Albin Julius. However, the duo fell out at the end of the 1990s, so that Julius was now able to concentrate completely on working with his project.

Albin Julius is also known for his collaborations with Death in June , Boyd Rice and Wumpscut , from which he later distanced himself and forbade the re-release of their albums by a court. Der Blutharsch publishes her recordings on its own label, We never capitulate. In addition, Julius operates with Hau Ruck! a label for other bands in the field of neo-folk and experimental music.

On the album When Did Wonderland End? the band began with a clear course correction in terms of image and music. The controversial uniforms, runes and symbols disappeared and the music developed towards psychedelic rock. This development reached its conclusion in the album Flying High (2009) - Der Blutharsch had now fully arrived in classic psychedelic rock, which only had the intentionally dull sound quality in common with the music from the band's early days.

In April 2006 Der Blutharsch played a European tour announced as a “farewell tour” together with Bain Wolfkind and German Nepal , which also included two concerts in Germany. In the meantime, however, the band has made it clear that they want to continue playing concerts. In September 2009 Der Blutharsch went on tour again and played at an art festival together with The Damned and Hermann Nitsch in Tilburg .

In 2010, Der Blutharsch officially disbanded and re-founded as Der Blutharsch and the Infinite Church of the Leading Hand. In December 2010, Flying High was voted 8th on the Austrian wire charts.

controversy

Since the band referred to the aesthetics of National Socialism in their early releases and resorted to war symbols (e.g. Iron Cross ), they were accused of being right-wing extremists .

The befriended electronics project Wumpscut was criticized for mutual remix activities. Rudy Ratzinger, who is behind the project, refused to distance himself from his collaboration with Julius and for this reason was criticized several times by the music magazine Sonic Seducer , whereupon Ratzinger broke off contact with Sonic Seducer and, conversely, is no longer mentioned by him.

An application for an interim injunction made in 2007 by Albin Julius to refrain from using the label " neo-Nazi band" against the left-wing weekly newspaper Jungle World and its editor Ivo Bozic was rejected by the Frankenthal Regional Court. The court ruled that the statement was justified as a value judgment protected by press law on the basis of the band's use of National Socialist symbols, and rejected the application. The judgment became legally valid in 2007.

The court stated in the grounds that the newspaper dealt with the volume Der Blutharsch and its public appearance in a factual manner in the article in question. In addition, due to the overall appearance and behavior of the band Der Blutharsch, the assessment suggests that it is a band from the neo-Nazi milieu. This results from the live performances of the band in "uniformly fascist and Nazi-coded uniforms" and the use of symbols from the Nazi era on the homepage, merchandising articles and record covers. Anyone who presents themselves in this way has to accept a critical appraisal of their public work.

Albin Julius himself has repeatedly distanced himself clearly from such allegations in various interviews and statements, for example in the music magazine Orkus , No. 04 / April 2006, or in the Austrian magazine Rokko's Adventures (2008), where he was asked whether he was a Nazi, replied: “I have never been, will never be, don't want to be, I'm not! I just don't care. "

The volume was also certified in 2012 in the magazine Der Rechts Rand that “the former showcase band of martial neo-folks has changed sustainably”.
