Kei Kumai
Kei Kumai ( Japanese 熊 井 啓 , Kumai Kei ; born June 1, 1930 in Nagano , † May 23, 2007 in Tokyo ) was a Japanese director .
Recognition brought Kumai in 1968 A Tunnel In The Sun ( Kurobe no Taiyō ) with Toshirō Mifune . This was followed by the drama Shinobugawa (1972, with Komaki Kurihara and Gō Katō ). He became famous with his 1974 film Sandakan House No. 8 ( Sandakan hachiban shōkan bōkyō , with Komaki Kurihara and Kinuyo Tanaka ).
The North Cape became an international success in 1976 ( Kita no misaki , with the French Claude Jade and Gō Katō and Kinuyo Tanaka ). In it, a nun (Jade) travels from Marseille to Yokohama and falls in love with an engineer (Katō). Another success was in 1980 Across all seas ( Tenpyō no iraka ).
Like Sandakan, his films Chi no mure , Asayake no uta and Hikarigoke were nominated for the Golden Bear at the Berlin Film Festival. For Umi to dokuyaku ( 海 と 毒 薬 , sea and poison , based on a novel by Endō Shūsaku ) Kumai received the Silver Bear at the 1987 Berlinale .
His most important late works include The Death of a Tea Master ( Sen no Rikyū , 1989, with Toshirō Mifune and Gō Katō), for which Kumai received the Silver Lion at the Venice International Film Festival , and the film adaptation of Akira Kurosawa 's last screenplay The Sea is Coming ( Umi wa miteita , 2002).
