Tanaka Kinuyo ( Japanese 田中 絹 代 ; born November 28, 1910 in Shimonoseki , Yamaguchi Prefecture ; † March 21, 1977 ) was a Japanese actress and director .

Tanaka began her career as a teenager in various revues (1920-1923) before she made her screen debut in 1924. She married the director Hiroshi Shimizu , who soon broke the relationship and divorced in the same year. Her role in Okoto zu Sasuke (1935) earned her recognition.

In her fifty-year career, she stood out above all with Kenji Mizoguchi's films The Victory of Women (1946), Utamaro and his five women (1946) about Kitagawa Utamaro , The love of actress Sumako (1947) about Matsui Sumako , Women of the Night (1948) , The Flames of My Love (1949), Ms. Oyu (1951), The Life of Ms. Oharu (1952), Ugetsu - Tales under the Rain Moon (1953), Sansho Dayu - A Life Without Freedom (1954) and A Woman From The one speaks (1954). Akira Kurosawa hired her for Rotbart (1965).

For her portrayal in Kei Kumai's Sandakan No. 8 Tanaka was awarded a silver bear at the 1975 Berlinale . Her last role was in 1976 alongside Claude Jade and Gō Katō in Kumai's film The North Cape .
