Scar Symmetry is a Swedish melodic death metal band that was formed in Avesta in 2004. It differs in its style decidedly from bands like Soilwork and Dark Tranquility , especially due to the extended electric guitar solos and the much higher proportion of clear vocals instead of the more usual guttural .

history

The band first met at Jonas Kjellgren's Black Lounge studio. The one -song demo Seeds of Rebellion emerged from a jam session , with which Scar Symmetry applied to various record labels . In mid-2004 the band signed with the Stockholm company Cold Records. For the German-speaking area, the band received a contract with Metal Blade .

The band worked for three months in the Black Lounge studio to record their self-produced debut album Symmetric in Design . The album received some euphoric reviews. Nevertheless, the band was often referred to as the Soilwork copy. Due to the good sales, Scar Symmetry received an offer from the German company Nuclear Blast , which signed the band in 2005. A short time later the second album was released with Pitch Black Progress . The song material was both more melodic and progressive, creating a clear difference to Soilwork's style. In the following time the band performed at a variety of events, including the Summer Breeze Open Air 2006 and the Bloodstock Open Air 2007.

With their third album Holographic Universe in mid-2008, the band continued their development. Acclaimed by various international magazines of the genre (e.g. the Metal Hammer magazine in England), the band delivered an even higher proportion of progressive and melodic parts and thus developed a completely independent style that differs significantly from that of the Gothenburg school.

Per Nilsson

At the beginning of autumn 2008, Scar Symmetry officially announced that she would part ways with her lead singer Christian Älvestam. As it said on the band's homepage, this was based on too different ideas about the future of the band, which is why Christian left them. It is secretly rumored among the fans that Älvestam would prefer to remain in the underground scene, while Scar Symmetry has become too popular in recent months, especially with the appearance of Holographic Universe . This would also be supported by the fact that Christian turned back to the group Unmoored , which is known as an insider group within the death metal genre. He also sings as the front singer with the death metal band Miseration and the melodic death metal band Solution .45 .

In search of a suitable replacement, Scar Symmetry finally came across the Swedish vocalists Roberth Karlsson and Lars Palmqvist. According to a blog entry on their Myspace page, the band has implemented a long-desired concept with two front singers, with which the group's vocals should continue to develop and which can still be implemented live. In the future Roberth will mainly take on the guttural and supportive clear singing, while Lars will mainly sing clearly and accompanying guttural.

The band's fourth album, called Dark Matter Dimensions , was released on October 2, 2009 in Europe. The two new singers can be heard on it for the first time. The video for the song 'Noumenon & Phenomenon' was released on October 7th, 2009 on the band's Myspace page and on December 1st, 2009 the video for the song 'Ascension Chamber' was published there. On April 15, 2011 her fifth studio album 'The Unseen Empire' was released. In 2013, co-founder and guitarist Jonas Kjellgren left. The reasons given were scheduling conflicts with his studio work and his two other bands Raubtier and Bourbon Boys.

In 2014 the band announced a trilogy of concept albums called The Singularity . The first album of the trilogy called The Singularity (Phase I: Neohumanity) was released on October 3, 2014 in Europe.

Music genre

Scar Symmetry plays Melodic Death Metal but due to its independent progressive sound it can only be compared to bands like Soilwork , In Flames or Disarmonia Mundi to a limited extent . The group is stylistically related to the bands of the so-called "Gothenburg School". The music changes from aggressive riffs and heavy use of drums to melodic sounds and gentle drums. A progressive influence is at work here. The singers, too, often switch between guttural and clear singing, Scar Symmetry clearly differentiates between the two techniques, while this transition is often not so clear in comparable groups. The clear voice is characterized by chants that are in some cases ballad- like, which distinguishes the band within its genre from the groups mentioned above.
