Martin Popoff

Martin Popoff (born April 28, 1963 in Castlegar, British Columbia ) is a Canadian music journalist , critic and non-fiction author . Its main theme is the history of metal . He wrote various artist biographies and analyzes on the development of the genre.

Life

Popoff was born in Castlegar, British Columbia in 1963 and grew up in Trail . The interest in hard rock was aroused in his then circle of friends by older siblings and cousins ​​and became independent with the personal discovery of Black Sabbath . Popoff studied English at the University of Victoria until he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in 1984 . Until 1987 he studied marketing at McMaster University . He finished his studies with the academic degree Master of Business Administration . After completing his studies, he started working for Xerox . While he was still at Xerox, Popoff co-founded The Perfect Page, a graphic design company in which he remained involved for nine years. He has been a full-time music journalist and author since 1998. He is married with one son and lives with his family in Toronto .

With over 7,900 album reviews, more than 1,400 interviews and more than 70 published books, Popoff is one of the most famous and productive journalists, reviewers and non-fiction authors of metal. He began publishing reviews and interviews for various metal magazines in 1989 and has worked as a reviewer and journalist for Guitar World , Lollipop , Goldmine , Record Collector , bravewords.com , lollipop.com and hardradio.com, among others .

In 1993, Riff appeared with Kills Man! 25 Years Of Recorded Hard Rock & Heavy Metal his first book, which summarized nearly 2,000 reviews previously published by Popoff. The following year, he teamed up with Tim Henderson , the magazine Brave Words & Bloody Knuckles , which was to become a market of Canada's leading metal magazines. With The Collector's Guide to Heavy Metal , Popoff continued the concept of his first book in 1997 and founded a series of books of the same name over the years of his writing activity. It appeared as The Collector's Guide to Heavy Metal compilations for publications of the 1970s 2003, the 1980s 2005, the 1990s 2007 and the 2000s 2011.

In addition to his reviews and journalistic work, Popoff wrote artist biographies and genre stories on various interpreters and sub-styles of metal. His first biographies appeared in 2004 and dealt with the groups Blue Öyster Cult and Rush , including Black Sabbath and Dio in 2006, a multi-part biography on Thin Lizzy in 2011 and 2012 and Whitesnake in 2015. Popoff was presented with his band biographies are often “a diffuse patchwork of excessively long interview sequences ”. Despite this allegation, some of his biographies have been translated. Among other things, he has written genre stories on Thrash Metal and several on the New Wave of British Heavy Metal as well as genre-related interview collections on genres such as Doom Metal , Progressive Metal , Glam Metal and Classic Rock . With Ye Olde Metal he started a book series in 2007 that summarized essays and interviews on early hard rock and heavy metal albums. The individual books in the series always refer to a period of one to five years.

Popoff also "regularly contributes to reports and documentaries from the world of rock and heavy metal". For the music broadcaster VH1 he participated in the research for the documentary series Metal Evolution from 2011.
