history

The area south of Arrow Lake was settled by Indians from the Lake Tribe . Europeans did not initially settle in this area as part of the settlement of the American West. There were only paths through this area that led from Waneta to Hope. It was not until gold was discovered in the Trail area in 1855 that settlers came to this part of British Columbia. The construction of the railroad was important to the history of Castlegar. After a bridge was built over the Columbia River, a train station was established in 1902, which was one of the nucleus of the settlement. In 1910 there was not only the train station, but also a hotel, a post office with city hall tasks and a school. The settlement grew steadily and became a village in 1946. Due to further growth, the city was named on January 1, 1966.

Demographics

The last official census , the 2016 Census , showed a population of 8,039 inhabitants for the settlement, after the 2011 census still showed a population of 7,816 inhabitants for the municipality. Compared to the last census in 2011, the population increased by a below-average 2.9% and developed more slowly than the provincial average, with a population increase of 5.6%. In the census period from 2006 to 2011, the population in the municipality had increased by 7.7%, while the provincial average increased by 7.0%.

At the 2016 census, the average age of the residents was 44.9 years, well above the provincial average of 42.3 years. The median age of the residents was determined to be 46.7 years. The median age of all residents in the province in 2016 was 43.0 years. For the 2011 census, a median age of 46.1 years was determined for the residents of the municipality, and 41.9 years for the residents of the province.

politics

The city is governed by the Castlegar City Council . The council consists of the mayor and six other members. These are elected for three years each. Mayor has been Bruno Tassone since 2018.
