The Columbia Mountains are a group of mountain ranges in southeastern British Columbia and partially in the US states of Montana , Idaho and Washington .
They extend over an area of 135,952 km². Three quarters of the range is in Canada and the remaining quarter in the United States . The mountain range is bounded by the Rocky Mountain Trench in the east and the Kootenay River in the south; the western limit is the edge of the Interior Plateau . With a height of 3519 m , Mount Sir Sandford in the Selkirk Mountains is the highest mountain in the mountain range.
With Columbia Lake and the adjacent Columbia Wetlands , the headwaters of the Columbia River lie in the Mountains.
