Emergence

Goddess of Sodomy was written while working on the previous album Vobiscum Satanas , but Dark Funeral was "not too happy" with the arrangements at the time and only finished the song a few years later. An Apprentice of Satan appeared in a different version on the EP Teach Children to Worship Satan . From January 2001 the band went to the Abyss Studio to record Diabolis interium .

The album was released on September 24, 2001. After its release, the band went on a European tour with Tidfall, Anorexia Nervosa and Ragnarok in the opening act, with Mikael Hedlund from Hypocrisy as bassist, and a US tour in the opening act of Cannibal Corpse .

Music style and lyrics

Robert Müller from Hard Rock & Metal Hammer wrote: “Already the first bars make it clear that in the three years since the last album VOBISCUM SATANAS [...] there have been no new priorities [...], but the men around Lord present themselves Ahriman on this […] ultra-fat lid with a fine hand for simultaneously enormously aggressive and anthemic Black Metal grenades. Only once, with 'Goddess Of Sodomy', is it a bit more leisurely and therefore all the harder. Apart from that, dignified melody lines whip throaty confessions to the horned out of the boxes [...]. ”His colleagues Claudia Pajzderski and Petra Schurer described the music as a“ high-speed club full of melodies ”. According to Schurer, the album impresses “with a series of razor-sharp [sic!] Black metal grenades [...], the sound also harmonizes perfectly with the thunderstorms of the reef. Every instrument can be heard in brilliant clarity, and yet the pressure of the rhythm section almost knocks you in the head. ”SasH and Andreas Reissnauer of Ancient Spirit Magazine wrote that the music was“ more melodic and epic than on 'Vobiscum Satanas' ”. They also saw Goddess of Sodomy as atypical, since it was held at a medium pace. Lord Ahriman stated that when writing the previous album, his personal approach was "to create a very fast and atmospheric album, with not that many melody lines in the songs". at Diabolis interium , the band felt that it was time to “sum up all of their best aspects of the music they have written so far and take everything to a completely new level”. With Diabolis interium she wanted to achieve “a better balance between sheer aggression, extremity, atmosphere and melodies” than ever before. She wanted to "realize every song for yourself, part of it for yourself and let the song stand out". The band also wanted to vary more in order to "make the overall view of the songs different". Regarding Goddess of Sodomy , Ahriman said that after the band had “written almost exclusively fast songs in recent years”, it was “time to bring out another side of DARK FUNERAL”. Due to its different speed, the song is also mentioned separately in the biography of the band online. In addition to this, Armageddon Finally Comes and The Arrival of Satan's Empire are highlighted as highlights, which in the opinion of many is “THE crown jewel in the Dark Funeral catalog”.

SasH and Reissnauer seem to have the song titles "once again very misanthropic and blasphemous ". According to Ahriman, the music and the lyrics reflect the personalities of the musicians. Caligula worked on the clarity of the texts and lifted the message to a new extreme level. The new album is still based on their satanic point of view and their extreme hatred of organized forms of religion. Everything revolves around the war between God and Satan . In addition, the band have integrated some new elements into the lyrics, Goddess of Sodomy is based more on sadomasochism , the finding of pleasure in pain. When asked about his definition of Satanism, he replied that the band made this perfectly clear with the title of their album, which "translated into German means something like 'the inner devil'" and is based on the band's satanic standpoint. He himself is not a member of the Church of Satan , but has contact with some members and respects and supports their activities. He has developed his own kind of philosophy and code over the years and can find his personality in much of what CoS founder Anton Szandor LaVey spoke of. In the case of Hail Murder , Schurer speculated that the song "should [...] be anything but politically or ethically correct". Emperor Magus Caligula replied that he "almost thought that this question would come". The song calls "in no way to murder, but is about a historical event, namely the crucifixion of Christ". He wanted “in this song only to glorify an act long past, but not to conjure up a crime. Of course, the title is a kind of declaration of war, and that is also wanted. "

reception

Due to the success with Diabolis interium , Dark Funeral was able to conclude license agreements with Soundholic Co.Ltd in Japan, Hellion Records in Brazil, Mystic Production in Poland, Rocris Disc in Romania and Bulgaria, S.Stack Co. Ltd in Thailand, Irond Records Ltd in Russia as well conclude with Magnum Music in Taiwan, Hong Kong and China. In Sweden, the radio station Rocket 95.3 FM nominated Dark Funeral in the category “Best Swedish Hard Rock Band” alongside Breach , Entombed and Arise .

According to Müller, Diabolis interium is “high-class Black Metal […], which in my eyes (and ears) no longer moves mountains that have not been moved by bands like Dimmu Borgir or Dark Funeral themselves on their last album. A must for fans of the genre! ”He awarded five out of seven points. According to Pajzderski and Schurer, the album is "one of the acoustic highlights in the Black Metal scene". According to SasH and Reissnauer, the band “surpassed themselves with the album and released their previous masterpiece. The album is definitely one of the best in recent Black Metal history and a must for every fan of the black muse. ” Rock Hard included the release in its list of“ 250 Black Metal Albums That One Should Know ”.
