Carnethy Hill

The carnethy hill with a height of 573 m is the second highest peak of the Pentland Hills . It is located in the west of the Scottish Council Area Midlothian on the eastern flank of the approximately 25 km long range of hills. The small town of Penicuik is around five kilometers to the east. The neighboring hills are the six meters higher Scald Law in the southwest and the Turnhouse Hill in the northeast.

Archaeological finds

There is a possibly Bronze Age cairn on top of Carnethy Hill . The system has a diameter of around 21 m and a height of 1.9 m. Although the cairn has been disturbed, the core appears to be untouched. The facility is classified as a Scheduled Monument . At the beginning of the 1990s, a Bronze Age ax was found on the northeast flank, at an altitude of 450 meters. It has been placed in the collection of the National Museum of Scotland .

Carnethy Hill Race

The Carnethy Hill Race has been held annually since 1971 . The route of the running event is over five hills, South Black Hill , Scald Law, East Kip , West Kip and Carnethy Hill. A total of over 2500 meters in altitude are overcome. The number of starting places is limited.

Surroundings

The Logan Burn runs along the northwest flank . Between Scald Law and Carnethy Hill this is dammed up to the Loganlea Reservoir . The reservoir, dammed up in 1851, as well as the downstream Glencorse Reservoir , served as the drinking water supply for Edinburgh . The A702 trunk road (Edinburgh - St John's Town of Dalry ) runs along the south-west flank .

Traces of earlier settlement can be found on the slopes of Carnethy Hill. Remnants of buildings can be found in various places, which are likely to be farms or shepherds' houses.
