East Kip

The East Kip is a 534 m high hill in the chain of the Pentland Hills . It is located in the west of the Scottish Council Area Midlothian on the eastern flank of the approximately 25 km long range of hills. The small town of Penicuik is five kilometers to the east. The neighboring hills are South Black Hill and Scald Law in the east, West Kip in the southwest and Hare Hill in the northwest.

The name of the hill contains the old Scottish word kip , which describes an object with an upturned point, especially a pointed hill. It is possibly related to the outdated German word "Kippe" or "Kipfe" for tip .

Surroundings

In the middle of the 19th century, the discovery of bronze weapons was reported between the Kips and Braid Law not far from Eastside Farm . However, nothing is known about their whereabouts. A Neolithic ax with a length of 115 cm was found 500 m northeast in 2002 .

Further traces of earlier settlement can be found on the Logan Burn stream , which flows through the valley between East Kip and Hare Hill. The Hare Hill House was the home of a shepherd and is a testament to the great importance of sheep farming in the Pentland Hills over the past centuries. The foundation walls of the 9 m × 5.5 m building have been preserved up to a height of one meter. It is followed by a smaller structure that could have been a terrace. In addition, an oval area is fenced in, which could have been used to collect the animals. The site was abandoned in the first half of the 19th century.

There was likely once a cross along the path between East Kip and Scald Law. The 90 m × 85 m foundation was removed by a local farmer in the 19th century.
