Pain is a Swedish metal group and is a project by Peter Tägtgren , who, in addition to his work as a producer, is mainly known for his role as the front man and composer of the death metal band Hypocrisy .
Stylistically, however, the side project and his main band differ, the music of Pain can be described as alternative metal with electronica and techno borrowings, while the debut of 1996 still tended towards dark metal with influences from industrial rock .
Band history
“I don't feel like having to keep asking people whether this or that is okay. It's the same with the record company. I give her my album and I don't care what she does with it afterwards. Either way, I'm proud of what I delivered at that moment. The label bosses can’t change anything. I don't let anyone talk me into the song writing process. Pain is my own ego trip. "
Tagtgren signed his first contract with the German label Nuclear Blast in 1996 and in the same year released the self-titled debut Pain , on which he had been writing and experimenting alone for years. As with the following albums in the project, Tägtgren is solely responsible for all pieces and arrangements, with a few exceptions he plays all the instruments himself.
The second work Rebirth , released on Stockholm Records in 2000, marked the project's commercial breakthrough. The single End of the Line received a gold record in Tägegren's homeland, Sweden .
The following album, Nothing Remains the Same (2002), was the most mass-compatible to date. A cover version of The Beatles song Eleanor Rigby , which was recorded with a 16-piece orchestra in the world-famous Polar Studios (including ABBA , Led Zeppelin , The Rolling Stones and Genesis ), attracted a lot of attention .
The album Dancing with the Dead was released in April 2005; it was thematically dedicated to the near-death experience of Tägtgren when he suffered a brief cardiac arrest while recording the album. In keeping with the gloomy mood of the lyrics, in contrast to the previous albums, almost all pop influences have disappeared and alternative rock and metal elements have been given more space. After the album was released, a tour followed as the opening act for Tiamat .
Two years later, Psalms of Extinction was their fifth studio album. It was released by Roadrunner Records and entered the German album charts. A video clip was shot for Zombie Slam . After festival appearances and a club tour through Europe, a major European tour followed as the opening act for Nightwish .
On February 22nd, 2008, on the eve of an appearance with Nightwish, Tägtgren, Johan Husgafvel and David Wallin were physically assaulted in Leipzig. Tagtgren had to be sewn with ten stitches.
In October 2008, the sixth studio album Cynic Paradise was released by Nuclear Blast . Anette Olzon , at that time still a singer with Nightwish, contributed vocals to the songs Follow Me and Feed Us . In 2011 the album You Only Live Twice followed and in 2012 a double live album called We Come in Peace .
Trivia
The band's symbol is the “painhead”, who has been the band's mascot since 2006.
