Naglfar is a Swedish melodic black metal band from Umeå , which was founded in 1992 under the name Uninterred .

history

Singer Kristoffer W. Olivius

Naglfar was founded in 1992 under the name Uninterred. After a few line-up changes, Naglfar recorded a rehearsal version of Sunless Dawn in 1993 . In 1994 drummer Ulf Andersson left the band, they recorded their first demo Stellae Trajectio with a drum computer . The band signed with Wrong Again Records . Mathias Holmgren joined as a drummer and the band wrote material for a first album. In 1995, three new songs were recorded to show Wrong Again Records new material. The recording, entitled We Are Naglfar - Fuck You! was also given out in limited numbers to friends and fanzines . The debut album Vittra was recorded in Peter Tägtgren's Abyss Studio , shortly afterwards Mathias Holmgren left the band to concentrate on his other musical projects. He is not shown on the cover . Due to his exit, the band had to turn down several live offers.

In 1996 the band was invited to take part in an Iron Maiden tribute. She booked the Sunlight Studio and recorded Slaughter with the help of her drummer friend Johan Moritz Maiden . The cassette contains a cover of Iron Maiden's The Evil that Men Do , a cover of Kreators Pleasure to Kill and a new song entitled 12th Rising .

In 1997 Naglfar found a new drummer in Mattias Grahn and began working on Vittra's successor . Two new songs were released on the 7 ” Picture EP When Autumn Storms Come in 1998, their second album Diabolical was released , and the band went on their first European tour with bands like Deicide , Six Feet Under , Brutal Truth , Amon Amarth and Ancient Rites .

In 2000 Morgan Hansson left the band and was replaced by Marcus "Vargher" Norman ( Bewitched , Ancient Wisdom , Throne of Ahaz ). In 2001 the EP Ex Inferis was released. In spring 2003 the third album Sheol came out. Naglfar performed at several festivals and went on a mini tour of Japan with Nile and Skinless .

In 2005 Jens Rydén left the band. Instead of looking for a new singer, it was decided that bassist Kristoffer Olivius should take over the vocals. Morgan Lie joined in as a guest musician for live performances. The band signed with Century Media and the album Pariah was recorded and released. For the digipak version, The Calling Blaze was covered by Norman's former band Throne of Ahaz, for the Japanese version of the album Skulls by the Misfits . Naglfar toured with bands like Finntroll and Amoral , Exodus , Hypocrisy , Dark Funeral , Wintersun and Endstille . The band also played again in Japan with Celtic Frost and Satyricon .

On February 23, 2007 the fifth album Harvest was released . After a North American tour with Dark Funeral, the band's activities decreased. In 2008 Mattias Grahn left the band because he could no longer invest 100% in it. Shortly thereafter, Naglfar also parted ways with Morgan Lie. The musicians decided to continue the band as a trio.

In 2011 the new album was pre-produced. On March 26, 2012, the current album entitled Téras was released . Dirk Verbeuren took part in the recordings as a guest drummer. Alexander Friberg of Necrophobic joined Naglfar as a guest bassist and Efraim Juntunen of Persuader joined the band as a live drummer.

style

Naglfar's music is often compared to that of Dissection , which Marcus “Vargher” Norman sees as understandable.

After the debut album Vittra , more catchy death metal influences were used, which made the follow-up Diabolical the most melodic Naglfar album according to Daniel Spielmann from the Evilized Webzine . According to singer Kristoffer W. Olivius, the production Diabolical is particularly different from the other releases of the band.

On Pariah , the band followed the style of their predecessor Sheol . However, the melodies moved more into the foreground, Olivius describes them as the most important feature of the album. At the same time, according to Spielmann, it has less catchy parts than Diabolical . The album contains numerous riffs and melodies reminiscent of Throne of Ahaz and in the digipak version the Throne-of-Ahaz cover The Calling Blaze . According to Norman, the title reflects the band's point of view in music. She stands alone and has never claimed to belong to a certain scene. According to Olivius, the band "also chose a certain 'outsider role'". The lyrics on the album are, according to Norman, "the most misanthropic and hateful lyrics ever" in the history of the band and not your average black or death metal lyrics.
