Endstille is a metal band from Germany .

history

Endstille was founded in 2000 by L. Wachtfels (guitar), Mayhemic Destructor (drums), Iblis (vocals) and Cruor (bass) in Kiel . L. Wachtfels and Mayhemic Destructor had previously played with the band Tauthr, Iblis and Cruor with Octoria. Mayhemic Destructor also plays under the pseudonym “Mayhemic Sensation” with the blues / boogie / rock band Overdrive Sensation, with whose guitarists he had previously played in a stoner rock band.

Endstille is one of the more successful German bands from the black metal environment; the CD version of the album Navigator (2005) was initially pressed in a 3000 edition, which was sold out before its official release, August 1st, because the Twilight label had shipped the CDs in advance and some stores were selling it early . Another 2,000 copies were pressed in August. In addition, the album had hit the Internet a few weeks before the release date, so Mayhemic Destructor announced that there would be no more promotion in the future. Since the band was dissatisfied with the distribution of their albums abroad, they signed a contract with Regain Records .

Founding member Iblis left the band in 2009. The reasons for this were not disclosed. For the time being, Mannevond ( Koldbrann ) and Lugubrem (Mordskog, Crimson Moon) helped out as singers. In the meantime, a new singer has been found in Zingultus ( Nagelfar , Graupel , Graven), who has also been permanently included in the line-up. While Nagelfar and sleet are accepted underground, end silence is “rather critically eyed”; Zingultus' accession is seen partly as a betrayal, partly as “perfection for final silence”.

Since June 28, 2010, the new album Infection 1813 has been recorded, which should be released in December. In January 2011 the band switched to their new label Season of Mist . Infection 1813 finally appeared in Europe on May 16 and in the US on May 17.

Style and texts

The band themselves used to describe their music as "disgusting aggressive Black Metal, with the rate of fire of an MG 42 and the penetration of heavy ship artillery". For the current singer Zingultus, however, Endstille is “not a black metal band in the original sense”, but an extreme metal band. The texts refer largely to personal experiences and opinions as well as to war scenarios or tactics and strategies in war. Iblis, who wrote most of the lyrics for the band, mostly refused to have them printed, which he justified by saying that it was too personal for him. The texts written by Cruor, however, are printed. Mayhemic Destructor names Voivod , Katatonia , Burzum and Gorgoroth as influences . Endstille's music is characterized by dissonant chords and subliminal guitar melodies that are often difficult to recognize due to extreme distortion. The often high tempo of the drums is supported by the fast guitar playing, but the chord changes are rather leisurely. Endstille sees monotony as a legitimate musical means of conveying the desired atmosphere and mood. Due to the monotonous and extreme style as well as the war theme, the band is also compared to Marduk . Mayhemic Destructor thinks, however, that apart from the speed, the bands have no musical similarities.

In their self-portrayal, the group refers to well-known German weapons from the time of the Second World War ("rate of fire of a MG 42 and [...] penetration of heavy ship artillery") and the Holocaust ("Death is a master from our empire", alluding to the death fugue by Paul Celan ). This in connection with the lyrics and the design of the album cover (e.g. the battleship Bismarck can be seen on the cover of Dominanz ) is for many critics an indication of the band's right-wing extremist affinity. The band expressly distances itself from the NSBM and emphasizes that it is apolitical. Mayhemic Destructor told Sheol Magazine that he “has nothing to do with Germany” and that the band refuses to play with bands “that represent political ideas in any way”. At a concert in Munich, Mayhemic Destructor had a concertgoer kicked out with a Graveland T-shirt. The design of the albums includes pictures of graves, corpses, the Bismarck and destroyed cities, but the band makes sure that the pictures do not contain any names, symbols or other elements of National Socialism , as they do not want to be associated with the NSBM scene .
