Nagelfar was a German extreme metal band that was founded in 1993 by drummer Alexander von Meilenwald and guitarist Zorn and broke up in 2002. The name comes from the death ship Naglfar from Nordic mythology , but the band chose the German spelling because it is a German band and uses "the pagan symbolism more in relation to (West) German history". Despite the name, the use of mythological images to reproduce their own thoughts and ideas and the interest in pagan themes, the band saw themselves as belonging to Black Metal and not assigned to Pagan Metal . Nagelfar is considered to be the trend-setting band of the German black metal underground . Wolf-Rüdiger Mühlmann, at that time still an employee of Rock Hard , described Nagelfar as a legendary band.

Band history

At the beginning the band had to struggle with casting problems, only after a long search Smaug joined the band as a singer. Weidmann Sveinn von Hackelnberg played the bass guitar from 1995. In the same year, Smaug was replaced by Jander, with which the band found their "first constant band line-up" in early 1995. At the end of 1995, the first demo appeared as the gates open . The second demo Jagd , which was recorded in a " semi-professional 8-track studio", was released in October 1996; shortly before that, the band had signed a contract with the Bremen record company Kettenhund Records, founded in the same year by Andreas “Yog-Sototh” Lacher.

In 1997 the band released the split single together with the Aachen dark metal band Dark Embrace on Sombre Records and shortly afterwards their debut album Hünengrab in the fall , which was recorded in Andy Classen 's studio , on Kettenhund Records. In 1998 Frank Stöver counted the band in the article Nagelfar. Germany's best black metal band? for the rock-hard magazine "one of the most hopeful representatives of the German black metal scene", who " shook the scene to the ground with their debut album Hünengrab in autumn ".

On September 26, 1998, the band performed with Riger , Dunkelgrafen , Barad Dûr, Vilkates and Lugburz at the festival in Behringen organized by Darker Than Black Records , where the band Absurd also appeared for the first time since they were fired for the murder of Sandro Beyer occurred to imprisoned members. At the end of 1998 Sveinn von Hackelnberg left the band for personal reasons, "but not without bequeathing to the band the lyrical concept of the story 'Srontgorrth' that he had worked out". The recordings of the concept album Srontgorrth (with the subtitle: The power seized mine like fear seized the blood of others ) were hampered by the persistent internal problems, as a result of which Jander also left the band and "therefore [sic!] Only himself on this album is still responsible for parts of the singing ”. In the spring of 1999, Srontgorrth was released. Around the same time, bassist Chaos joined the band. From autumn 1999 Zingultus was responsible for the singing post. After the album was released, Kettenhund Records ceased operations. Chaos left the group and Nagelfar signed a deal with Ars Metalli in March 2000 and took on Virus West . This was followed by a specially produced contribution to a split single with the band Bluttaufe, which was published by Christhunt Productions in autumn 2000 . Virus West appeared in January of the following year . Since the band had problems finding a bass player, the three of them continued to play and hired Gnarl from their band, Graupel, as their constant live bass player.

The band broke up on April 24th, 2002 after Zorn Zingultus and Alexander von Meilenwald "[informed] that he could no longer muster the energy and motivation he should have had for NAGELFAR". Since the band was founded, it had been a “done deal” that Zorn and Alexander von Meilenwald only wanted to lead the band together. The exit of one of the members "had to mean the end". According to Alexander von Meilenwald, the exit “was not too surprising either, it was beginning to emerge”. Some of the band members of the last line-up are still active in black metal; From 2002 onwards, Zingultus shifted the priorities to his band Graupel, founded in 1995, joined the band Graven, and has been singing with Endstille since 2009 , while drummer Alexander von Meilenwald participated in Abusus and Kermania , helped out with Truppensturm and Heemat and a solo project called The Ruins of Beverast , where he insists that it is not a successor to Nagelfar. Contrary to rumors to the contrary, he never helped out with sleet. In addition, some former members of Nagelfar run the Ván Records label .

style

Nagelfar saw themselves as a typical black metal band. However, their texts were not about Satanism , but mostly about Germanic mythology . In terms of music, song structures typical of Black Metal were used. But clear, emotional singing was also used - alternately or in combination with growled singing . Comprehensive keyboard arrangements and (especially on Srontgorrth ) electronic or techno elements were also incorporated into the compositions.

While Hünengrab in autumn and Srontgorrth were concept albums based on mythology with complex songs in epic lengths, Virus West again focused on shorter, self-contained songs. The lyrics dealt with violence and war, on the cover the Westwall erected by the National Socialists was depicted, which, according to Alexander von Meilenwald, “for heaven's sake cannot be interpreted politically [...], but rather the dark side of the West German landscape and the musical scenario should support. "Virus West" is a pathogen that comes from the West - that's us ”.
