Riger was a Viking / Pagan Metal band from Frankfurt (Oder) . Due to the neo-pagan orientation, the band characterizes their music as "German Heathen Metal". Accordingly, the name given by the lyricist and singer Ingo Tauer comes from the "German variant" of Nordic mythology "and is also a bit encrypted, as it stands for 'rig', the name of the guardian of Asgard , i.e. Heimdall ."

history

The band was founded in 1996 as a sextet and tried “ to realize their personal ideas of Heavy Metal in the broader sense and Black Metal in the narrower sense”, so at the beginning they were strongly oriented towards Black Metal. First she released a demo called Die Siege , limited to 100 copies , on her own , after which she got a contract with CCP Records . In February 1998 she brought out her debut The Wanderer , where some of the demo songs were re-released.

In 1999 the successor Hamingja appeared . Musically melodic metal was played on the first two albums, and especially on Hamingja the keyboards prevail. After keyboardist Roberto Liebig, who is now active with his own project Dorn , left the band, the music became much harder and a successor for the keyboard was not sought; the guitar-heavy style emerged "[s] ch already at the time of the first collection of material for 'Des Blutes Voice'". Overall, the music got a strong Death Metal influence . Gjallar (2004) can in part be described as a death metal album.

Since 2006 the band had problems getting new material because the members no longer lived close to each other. Nevertheless, a new album was released in April 2009 with the title "Streyf". In Streyf is also atmospheric death metal mixed with folk -Anteilen played.

The Riger frontman Ingo took part in 2010 as a guest singer in the Berlin Pagan Metal band Vargrimm , which will release their album "Des Wolfes Zorn" on July 30, 2010 with Asatru Klangwerke.

On May 22, 2015 the band was disbanded. Guitarist Christoph Hellmann is still active in the Frankfurt band Ahnengrab , which he co-founded in 2006. Matthias Eschrich, who joined Riger in 2011, is an active founding member at Saxorior . Bassist Janko Jentsch joined the group Minas Morgul in 2018 .

Relationship to right-wing extremism

The cover of the album Hamingja attracted attention , on which an ornate Celtic cross was to be seen, which led to Riger being said to be an affirmation of neo-Nazi ideas. Several passages of the album In Blood voice (2002) and in the booklet reprinted thanksgiving to "Alex" from the NSBM band Dead Castle (which in several publications' back greet ") cemented this reputation. Subsequent statements by the members, however, imply that they are outspoken patriots who do not want to have anything to do with neo-Nazi circles and whose texts are in no way to be understood politically. When asked about "Politics in the BM", the guitarist Peter Patzelt replied: "A circus staged by the media that will hopefully soon come to an end." The song Germania on the debut album expresses the Brandenburgers' homeland, which led to that a large part of the fans were recruited from the nationalist camp.

During the band's appearances at the Ragnarök festivals in 2006 and 2007, the group's supporters gave several Hitler salutes, which however led to some of them being kicked out of the festival hall.
