Saxorior is a melodic black metal band from Pirna in Saxon Switzerland . The name is made up of "Saxon" and "Warrior".

history

Saxorior was founded in January 1994 by Matthias Eschrich, Kai-Uwe Schneider, Dirk David and Uwe Vogt. Schneider and Eschrich, who previously played together in the GDR band "Titan", produced the first demo tape The First Fight in June . In the same year Timo Pfeifer switched from "Corpsess" to the band as the new drummer. In addition to several concerts in the region, Saxorior was a guest in November 1994 on the metal show "Six Pack" with Matthias Hopke on Radio Energy . In the spring of 1995 the band began recording their first album Return from the Dark Side in the studio . The album was not released until November 1995 for technical and financial reasons. With the new keyboardist Frank Nitzsche, concerts with Eminenz, Benediction and Iced Earth followed . In August and September 1996 the songs for the EP Beyond Conceptions were recorded as an in-house production, the release concert took place in Altenberg (Ore Mountains) with the bands Purgatory and Venena. The years 1997 and 1998 were reserved for concerts, among others with Eisregen , Dunkelgrafen and Enslaved . In addition, new song material was developed. In November 1998 one of the new songs, Burning Stone , appeared on the GUC fanzine sampler. In the spring of 1999 Kai-Uwe Schneider opened his polygam recording studio in Pirna. In May / June 1999 the album Portent of Eternity was recorded there and released in August 1999 on the independent label GUC.

style

In the first few years Saxorior played only English-language Melodic Black Metal, with the typical form of guttural singing . According to his own statement, "life and death, universe, emergence and decay are topics of the texts". Most of the lyrics are about battles, with historical as well as fantastic backgrounds. The two most recent publications provide German-language concept albums is so addressed Battle the events in the early 19th century, especially the eponymous Battle of Leipzig by 1813. The current album Saksen turns lyrical contrast to the history of the Old Saxons of the early Middle Ages, similar to that already Album Saxot from the year 2001, which was still in English. It is noticeable that the band identifies with the history of their state of Saxony as well as the historically non-identical settlement area of the Saxons . Due to the thematic approach to mythological-pagan themes on said albums and the musical orientation, the boundaries to Pagan Metal are fluid, which is why Saxorior are now assigned to this and appear at scene festivals such as the Dark Troll Festival .

“What is offered is an absolutely successful mix of black and pagan metal. Aggressive high-speed parts are interrupted by sustained instrumental passages [...] "(Legacy 03/99; from the review of the album Potent of Eternity )
