Once Sent from the Golden Hall is the first studio album by the Swedish melodic death metal band Amon Amarth . It was released on February 10, 1998 via Metal Blade Records .

Origin and publication history

The album was originally recorded in March 1997 in the Sunlight studio in Stockholm, but since the studio owner Tomas Skogsberg did not process the recordings satisfactorily according to the band, it was reworked and mixed in the following autumn in the Abyss studio by Peter Tägtgren .

Once Sent from the Golden Hall was released on February 10, 1998, limited to 1000 copies on CD and LP. The cover of this publication is by Peter Kinmark. In 2005 Metal Blade released an LP limited to 500 copies. In 2009 a “Deluxe Edition” was released as a double CD with a fold-out digipack. The first CD contains the original album remastered by Jens Bogren, plus the song Siegreicher Marsch , the German version of Victorious March , which was released in 2002 on "Versus the World". The second CD contains the recordings of the first "Bloodshed Over Bochum" live show on December 28, 2008 in Bochum , where the band played the album in full. In addition to a 24-page booklet, liner notes from Hegg and Mikkonen were also enclosed. The cover shows the reduced original cover framed by four swords.

reception

The reviews were positive overall: Allmusic finds that “Amon Amarth's war anthems take themselves a little too seriously”, but praises the “competent songwriting” and the “excellent musicians”. The reviewer Chad Bowar thinks the band's typical sound can be heard on this album. Chris McDonald, on the other hand, thinks the album contains "some of the best material that Amon Amarth has written to this day" and praises the relatively high complexity compared to later albums. waytooloud.com awards four and a half out of five points.
