With Oden on Our Side is the sixth studio album by the Swedish melodic death metal band Amon Amarth . It was published across Europe on September 25, 2006, in the German-speaking area on September 22, 2006 and in the United States on October 3, 2006.
History of origin
Work on the new album began immediately after returning from a North American tour with Children of Bodom and Trivium . Since the band members now all had no jobs besides the band, they could invest more time in songwriting and preparatory rehearsals. From January to April the material was revised and prepared for the longer recordings, in which all members were always present for the first time.
The album was recorded from May 3 to June 19, 2006 in the Swedish Fascination Street Studio in Örebro with the support of producer Jens Bogren, who had been recommended to Amon Amarth by friendly groups Katatonia and Opeth .
Music genre
Compared to the previous album Fate of Norns , the music is much heavier again, a return to its roots. Typical of Amon Amarth, the texts deal with Nordic mythology . With the song "Under the Northern Star" by guitarist Johan Söderberg, a more ballad-like piece is included for the first time .
design
The cover design was again created in cooperation with Thomas Ewerhard and its simplicity differs fundamentally from that of the previous albums. The stylized portrait of Odin on Sleipnir comes from the Gotland picture stone "Tjängvide" from the 8th, 9th or 10th century, which was discovered in Gotland in 1844 and is now in the Historiska Museet in Stockholm. The embossed runes above the image stand for the album title, the lower right for the name of the band. On the back there are the runes Othala , Dagaz , Ehwaz and Naudiz for "Oden".
Versions
In addition to the versions on CD and LP, there is also a limited digipak edition that contains a bonus CD. This was originally supposed to contain a live recording from Wacken Open Air , but since the live DVD Wrath of the Norsemen had been released shortly before , this plan was discarded. In addition to two live songs, the CD now also contains demos and previously unreleased material. Furthermore, a limited LP version was released, which was pressed on red vinyl .
